'aimee lou wood as the doctor would be insane'; 'Yeah she would knock the companion role out of the park, but she has the talent to take the role of the Doctor and take it to some really good places'.

The last person to star as the famous time traveller was none other than Aimee's friend and former co-star Ncuti Gatwa, with the duo coming to fame together in Netflix hit Sex Education.

Coincidentally, Ncuti himself will follow in Aimee's footsteps by taking up the mantle of SNL UK host in just two weeks time, appearing alongside indie-pop singer Holly Humberstone on the series finale on May 16.

He exited as 15th Doctor last year, with his iteration of the Time Lord regenerating into Billie Piper, who previously played companion Rose Tyler.

However, Billie's involvement in the show's long term future remains unclear, with reports claiming that she will not be playing the Doctor on a permanent basis.

The TV serieshas been paused for an extended break after ending its big budget partnership with Disney+, but the BBC is committed to a 2026  special.

It has been reported that bosses are working hard to find a new Doctor so filming can commence, however some have claimed the once coveted role has become a 'poisoned chalice'.

As well as praising her comedic talents, fans also took the opportunity to endorse the White Lotus star as the prospective new Doctor, after her appearance in the parody sketch

In March, a source said: 'From the moment it was confirmed Ncuti was leaving, bosses have subtly been putting feelers out among the industry for an actor who could play the Doctor.'

But they added to The Sun: 'Despite once being one of TV's most coveted roles, it's now seen as a bit of a poisoned chalice.

'Plus, anyone taking on the job will want to know if it's going to be a one-off festive special or go beyond that as they will want to plan their workload over coming years.'

Aimee's overall performance on SNL UKwas lauded by fans, with many calling her 'refreshing' and 'phenomenal' with her  impression branded a 'series highlight'.

Viewers on X praised: 'Aimee-Lou Wood is exactly what you look for in an SNL host. Genuinely excited to be there, and throw everything into it. So good';

'Aimee Lou Wood is smashing #SNLUK so far'; 'Have had Aimee Lou Wood on my host list for #snluk for aaaages and she is already smashing this';

'100% my favourite SNL UK episode yet every sketch is better than the rest and today's weekend update was so good not even to mention Aimee Lou Wood like come on #SNLUK'.

Her hosting debut on SNL UK came a year after the original US show infamously mocked her teeth in a cruel skit, which saw Sarah Sherman wearing huge prosthetic teeth to impersonate Aimee.

In a clip announcing her guest appearance, Aimee took the opportunity to fire back over the 'mean and unfunny' parody.

As she met with a handful of the cast on set in the video, she referenced the fallout, saying: 'Hey guys, I cannot wait to get started, you know, especially after the whole 'thing' in America with my teeth. It's gonna feel good to just wipe the slate clean.'

However, Billie's involvement in the show's long term future remains unclear, with reports claiming that she will not be playing the Doctor on a permanent basis

She jokingly ranted: 'Oh my god have you guys got fake teeth in? Wow, this is all just one big setup to humiliate me then. I thought SNL UK would be different, but I was wrong.'

However, the funny promotional clip ended with the cast revealing they were just hiding fake moustaches.

SNL's White Lotus skit sparked backlash last year over its cruel mockery of Aimee, with the BAFTA winner publicly calling the show out.

Speaking to BBC News about the controversy last September, she explained she was glad she'd stood up for herself.

She said: 'I don't regret saying it because it was breaking a pattern, which is what I would usually do - what I did when I was younger and got bullied.

'I have a choice here to go in and be embarrassed about it and just say 'I didn't like that. It was mean'.'

Aimee later updated her followers to say HBO had apologised to her, while Sarah - who had played her in the sketch - also reached out and sent her a bouquet of flowers.

Breaking her silence, the comedian said she felt 'terrible' over hurting Aimee and admitted she still had lots to learn about navigating comedy, while considering the feelings of others.

She said: 'I was excited to play her because she's so iconic, her character is so iconic, and I f***ing obviously never meant to hurt anyone's feelings.

'Never in a million years did I get into comedy to make anyone upset. I feel terrible that anyone would feel bad.'
