Missing from the action was Emily’s three-year-old son Sylvester and mother Kathleen Balgley.
John is a California-based professional artist with sculptures and paintings in dozens of galleries across the United States and Europe.
Meanwhile, Kathleen, who is from Poland, is a tenured college professor — having previously taught at UCLA and UCSD — and a published author.
Though Emily was born in London, she was raised in Encinitas, a beach city near San Diego, California. She is John and Kathleen’s only child.
Emily, who was signed to Ford Models at age 14, had the full support of her parents as she pursued modeling.
After finding fame as the video vixen in Robin Thicke’s Blurred Lines music video in 2013, Emily has front major fashion campaigns for Versace and Victoria’s Secret.
She’s since branched out into acting and even published a memoir in 2021.
In an interview with Cultured in 2023, both Emily and John spoke about her upbringing and how she was destined to be an artist herself.

‘I mean..your mother is a writer and I’m a visual artist,’ he told Emily. ‘So it was an obvious step to me when you moved into acting.
‘I knew whatever you did was going to be art-related. It’s just who we are.’
John shared his approach to parenting and how he encouraged Emily to explore her own creativity growing up.
‘My feeling about life, in general, is to make things first and talk about them later, you know?’ he explained. ‘Raising you, I wanted to put everything out there. Ideas, materials, questions, and leave you alone with it.
‘Afterward, I’d tell you what I thought was good and what you could do better. You always found your way through your art and your career,’ John said.
In the same interview, Emily talked about growing up in the house her father built in San Diego as well as the properties he owned and restored in Ireland and Spain.
‘You built our San Diego home, and you worked on the Ireland one, which was pretty beat-up. I remember summers in Spain helping you restore that place, too. You learned a local rock-building technique to make the patio,’ she recalled.
She remembered how her and her dad would go ‘dumpster diving’ to find items for him to turn into art and how he’d often involve her in his creative process as a kid.

She told her fans the ‘main reason that I’m sharing that I did this because I’ve seen so many comments that associate divorce with failure and shame. And both personally and politically, I fundamentally disagree with that.’
‘I think historically, the shame around divorce is at least partly what has kept women in unfair, unhappy, and even sometimes abusive marriages,’ she said.
‘Finding the resources and strength to leave a relationship is often a very brave and remarkable act,’ she maintained.
‘I’m not trying to make the point that everyone needs to make a divorce ring or turn their wedding dress into a mini dress or whatever symbolic gesture for evolution, but I do think that single moms and women who are starting over for the first time in a terrifying way should find solace in the fact that they’re not failures for leaving.’
