Singer Grimes slammed X, the social media platform owned by her ex Elon Musk , as a really ‘dark’ place in a message calling out the ills of social media.
The 37-year-old returned to social media on Monday after downscaling her Internet usage and was clearly rattled by what she saw on her feed.
She took to X – formerly Twitter – to share her thoughts about what she perceived to be a ‘great harm’ being caused to society.
‘I’ve been way more offline lately, tried all the apps for a bit yesterday and man! It’s rly dark on here!’ she began on X on Tuesday.
‘I think it’s very unhealthy to be on social media, it feels like a ghost town of depression, bitterness and pictures of beautiful women doing sext things I feel like this is a massive moral failure of all the apps. And it’s causing great harm to society.’
Grimes has a deep link to social media herself as the mother of three of Musk’s children. She dated Musk on-off for four years before their split in March 2022, a month before he submitted a $44 billion offer to acquire Twitter.

His purchase was made official in October 2022 and his takeover saw him layoff much of the platforms staff and rename the company to X.
In follow-up responses with X followers responding to her initial post, Grimes claimed social media provided a space for individuals to fight over ‘fake problems’ and theorized her feed was populated with it’s current content due to her own activity.
When an X user replied to Grimes initial post with ‘it’s a battlefield,’ the singer said: ‘Not rly. Everyone’s fighting over fake problems while they don’t notice the existential ones.
‘When in reality they won’t even solve those issues they might pass some legislation that will solve it that might be overturned later but most of them don’t even look into the politics, don’t even know how they work, and r just angry someone thinks differently from them which will always happen.
‘If it’s a battlefield it’s in one’s mind against oneself I feel.’
After another user said they tried posting only a particular topic that made them happy, she replied: ‘Maybe it reacts to posts and I’ve posted too much politically. Yes I’ve been trying to come here for history/tech/phil rly only.’
Grimes recently opened up about her relationship with X during a February interview with Time, revealing she hadn’t been using the platform in some time.
‘I’ve actually been mostly off besides a couple days since the end of January or something,’ she explained.

‘It’s just where all the cutting-edge news is, and all my friends use it, and the AI stuff. And it’s good to keep track of the political stuff. Ultimately, I don’t know. I love to debate. I like getting in fights. They hate me less on Twitter than everywhere else.’
Grimes is the mother to three of Musk’s 13 children – four-year-old X AE A-XII, three-year-old Exa, and two-year-old Techno.
The songstress has had an ongoing battle with the so-called First Buddy over the care of their children.
Most recently, Grimes said she has ‘begged’ the DOGE chief and ‘tried legal recourse’ to keep their children away from the White House and out of the spotlight as X AE A-XII was repeatedly pictured in the Oval Office and at CPAC.

‘I have tried begging the public and my kids dad to keep them offline, and I’ve tried legal recourse,’ Grimes wrote on the social media platform owned by her ex in March.
Her remarks came in response to a thread criticizing her response to protecting children from online discourse, with X users saying she should be protecting her children from online trolls.
‘I unfortunately do not control the internet and cannot wipe this from the internet,’ the singer said.
‘I’ve seen young ppl destroyed by the internet too. The state of my children’s lives being public is of grave concern to me and I think about how to solve this every day.

‘It’s insane to me that there’s no way to deal with this. I would hope there was some law that would allow a parent to veto small children from living public lives but I don’t even trust the law to help me now if I tried to invoke it tbh.’
In her interview with Time in February, Grimes also shared her desire for her son’s high-profile appearances to end as soon as possible.
‘I would really like people to stop posting images of my kid everywhere,’ she told the publication. ‘I think fame is something you should consent to.’
Just a few days before the interview was published, Grimes also sent a panicked X message to Musk about one of their child’s ‘medical crisis.’

‘Plz respond about our child’s medical crisis,’ she wrote to her ex. ‘I am sorry to do this publicly but it is no longer acceptable to ignore this situation. This requires immediate attention.’
Grimes added that Musk didn’t even have to respond to her but could contact her through a third party.
‘If you don’t want to talk to me can you please designate or hire someone who can so that we can move forward on solving this. This is urgent, Elon.’

After Techno was born, Grimes sued Musk in September 2023 over parental rights to their children in a California court. Musk allegedly fought to keep the hearing closed, asking for the documents to be sealed.
She claimed that Musk was withholding access to her kids and even prevented them from seeing their terminally ill maternal grandmother.
Musk then sued for for custody of the children he shares with Grimes in Texas, where his businesses are headquartered.
A Travis County Clerk has since confirmed that the Texas dispute had been settled, but declined to give further details.
Grimes, though, claimed the ordeal almost left her ‘bankrupt’ and unable to make new music.
