Ellen Pompeo will return to her beloved character Dr. Meredith Grey in at least four episodes of Grey’s Anatomy season 20.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, the 54-year-old actress could possibly be in even more episodes of the upcoming installment.
Pompeo signed on to produce and star in a limited series for Hulu and was not expected to have much airtime in the next season of Shonda Rhimes’ long-running show.
She was reduced from series regular to recurring after announcing her departure from Grey’s in November 2022.
Jessica Capshaw, 47, will also reprise her role as Arizona in a single episode.

Last season, Pompeo appeared in less than 10 of the 20 episodes before she was written out in the finale after her character relocated to Boston.
She is is expected to continue to do her signature voiceover for the show, which began in 2005 during season one.
It’s been teased that Meredith will have a substantial storyline ahead of the upcoming March 14 premiere.
The forthcoming bit of the show will be much shorter than planned, with only 10 episodes due to last year’s writers’ and actors’ strikes.
It will also be the first season for Meg Marinis as showrunner, following Krista Vernoff’s exit.
Vernoff, 52, who started as a staff writer on the series when it debuted in 2005, worked her way up to head writer and showrunner of the series.
She was brought back in 2017 to serve as showrunner on both Grey’s Anatomy and the spin-off Station 19, but has since left both shows.
Meanwhile, Marinis has been with since season three and begun her tenure as a writer’s production assistant.

Last month Pompeo reunited with several of her Grey’s Anatomy castmates during the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony.
The cast united to mark the show’s 20th season, making it the longest-running prime time medical drama in TV history.
She was joined by James Pickens Jr., Katherine Heigl, Chandra Wilson and Justin Chambers at the awards show, where they announced the winner of the award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.
During the ceremony, the actress gave a short speech in which she remarked that Grey’s Anatomy’s creator, Shonda Rhimes, knew that the show would ‘have a lasting influence on television.’
