The ABC sitcom The Middle came to an end in 2018 after nine seasons, but the beloved series came incredibly close to continuing on with a spin-off.

Actress Eden Sher resurfaced this week and confirmed that a spin-off centered around her character Sue Heck was in development.

Unfortunately, the project was abruptly pulled when there was a 'huge regime change' at ABC and the executives that had previously championed The Middle were ousted from the network.

Sher, now 34, opened up about the spin-off on The Joe Vulpis Podcast, which was titled Sue in the City.

'It was set in and it was a few years in the future,' she explained.

'She basically finds this really run-down hotel in Chicago and she makes it her mission to save this hotel,' she continued.

'And there's this cast of characters and Chicago is a little bit of a character.'

She also said that Brock Ciarlelli, who played her best friend Brad Bottig in The Middle, was going to live with Sue in the spin-off.

'It was about Sue living in the city! It had a little bit of a Kimmy Schmidt vibe, but it wasn't so dark,' she added.

Beau Wirick, who played Sue's husband Sean Donahue, was also set to pop up.

Sher said that she 'loved every second' of filming the pilot episode and was expecting it to be greenlit for a full season.

'I really liked it. It wasn't a perfect pilot but worse pilots have gotten on TV! There was so much potential,' she said.

Sher has continued to act since The Middle ended, most notably with a five-episode stint on Jane the Virgin in 2019.

Finn was on The Middle from 2010 until 2018. He played the recurring character Bill Norwood.

Soon after the news broke, Heaton shared a loving tribute on Instagram.

'One of the finest and funniest human beings I know has left to be with Jesus,' began the Hollywood veteran.

She added, 'Pat Finn, whom most of you know as Bill Norwood on The Middle had been battling cancer the last few years. At the too-young age of 60, he leaves behind his sweetheart Donna and three children.

'He was adored by all who knew him, and he leaves behind a legacy of love, friendship, and wonderful comedy.'
