Dylan Wright has finally broken his silence after viewers savaged his performance of Advance Australia Fair during Game One of State of Origin.
The Australia Idol winner was accused of ‘butchering’ the national anthem when he performed a ‘hipster’ version of the well-known song in front of 75,000 people at Accor Stadium in Sydney.
‘I was just honoured to be a part of it,’ he told Daily Mail Australia at the opening night of Chicago at the Capitol Theatre on Thursday.
‘The main thing I copped was people now know the words, especially after they got changed three years ago, so I’m happy with how everything went,’ he continued.
‘I’m a footy lover, so I was thrilled to be there.’

Dylan delivered a stripped-down, guitar-based rendition of the anthem written by Scottish-born Australian composer Peter Dodds.
However, many viewers took umbrage with the singer’s ‘diabolical’ interpretation.
It wasn’t long before they flooded X, formerly known as Twitter, with their thoughts.
‘What is this the Hipster Anthem? Diabolical,’ wrote one viewer.

‘Not a fan of artists putting their spin on the national anthem. Either sing it properly, or just play the Julie Anthony recording,’ commented one more.

‘Could be the worst anthem rendition in recent memory,’ quipped another.
