Delta Goodrem Criticized for her Alleged Support of Melbourne Cup: “Fashion and Fame Shouldn’t Come at the Expense of Animal Cruelty”

Delta Goodrem was hit with a slew of hate on Tuesday for supporting ‘blood sport’ as she performed at the Melbourne Cup.

The worldwide pop star, 38, shared several posts to her Instagram account on the day of the big race, but switched off the comments on most of them.

However, the Born to Try hitmaker was slammed in one paid sponsorship she posted with Vogue Australia and Flemington VRC, and which was left open to public scrutiny.

‘Lost me. Supporting animal cruelty in the name of fashion and fame. Shallow, Delta,’ one person commented beneath the video which promoted fashion at the races.

‘Nothing beautiful or stunning about your continued support of this barbaric industry Delta,’ another said.

They continued: ‘Horses are maimed and killed so you can dress up, sing and have a good time. Shame on you.’

A third wrote a lengthy message to the award-winning singer, saying they were ‘disappointed’ in her decision to ‘support and glamourise the Melbourne Cup’.

‘Glorifying and promoting animal exploitation in 2023, we are better than this!’ they added.

The Melbourne Cup has come under greater scrutiny and been targeted by the ‘Nup to the Cup’ movement following a spate of six horse deaths since 2013.

Those horses were Verema in 2013, Admire Rakti and Araldo in 2014, Red Cadeaux in 2015, Cliffsofmoher in 2018 and Anthony Van Dyck in 2020.

In 2021, the Victoria Racing Club introduced 41 additional safety measures after broad consultation. Those safety protocols were reviewed last year.

However, this year saw another horse death on the eve of the Melbourne Cup when two-year-old filly Rejuvenated was euthanised after falling on the track.

She was injured during training on Friday, the day before the four-day carnival officially began, and collapsed at Flemington.

Witnesses took photos of the shocking scene and claimed the horse was competing in a jumps out event, which promptly continued after her body was swept away.
