Today show star Danika Mason was having a ball at a nightclub in just days before she went viral for slurring and stumbling through a live cross during the Winter this week.

On Thursday, the Channel Nine sports reporter, 34, issued an on-air apology and admitted to drinking before the report aired on Wednesday morning in Australia.

Indeed, the hard-working TV star has been living it up in Italy on and off camera.

During one 'chaotic' live cross last Friday, Danika could be seen infiltrating a nightclub with a cameraman as she filmed Aussies and local Italians having a late night.

'This is where a lot of the Aussies are celebrating. You wouldn't really read about it, but this is the nightclub,' she said as she gleefully stepped into the venue.

Danika was immediately greeted with flashing neon lights, pounding music, and a slide that led down into the club.

She promptly handed her microphone over to the cameraman and took a dive down the slide, where security guards and staff waited to greet her.

As the night went on, the venue started to fill up with revellers, including one German man who had to be censored after he began swearing on live TV.

'Oh, I'm not allowed to say that on TV? I'm sorry,' he said, as Danika pulled the microphone away from him and began laughing.

'We've got limoncello shots on their way,' Danika said at one point as she delved into the dancing crowd.

Another scene showed the presenter dancing in the middle of a group of people, with another woman gyrating on a table behind her.

'How did I end up here? I'm supposed to be doing sport and this is where all the Aussies are. We've got people dancing on tables,' she said.

Danika then attempted to talk to another partygoer who was Australian.

'This is awesome. I love it here,' he managed to say with a very raspy voice.

'They've all lost their voices,' Danika said.

The star later took another crack at going down the slide and crashed right into the Italian 'owner' of the nightclub.

Collapsing to the floor in a fit of giggles, the man helped her to her feet and began whispering Italian in her ear.

'I can't. No. We're not doing limoncello. No shots,' Danika said as hosts Karl Stefanovic and Sarah Abo erupted into laughter back in the Australian studio.

'Well done, Danika. You're an absolute trooper,' Karl, 51, said.

Of course, it's not the only night out Danika has had out in Italy, as she went out for drinks earlier this week - this time off-camera.

She was then seen slurring her words during her live cross on Wednesday, which quickly went viral.

She featured in sport segments with Karl and Jayne Azzopardi while standing outside in a snowstorm at about 10pm local time.

'And guys, just before we do go, I just want to take a moment if that's okay, just to apologise,' she said at the end of her live cross.

'I also wanted to say thank you for everyone who has reached out. I'm okay. Probably just a little bit embarrassed.

'Look, I totally misjudged a situation. I shouldn't have had a drink. And especially in these conditions.

'It's cold. We've got altitude. And not having had dinner probably didn't help as well. But I want to take full responsibility. It's not the standard that I set for myself.

'So in saying that, I am genuinely sorry.'

Viewers have since taken to social media to praise the journalist following the on-air mishap.

'Good for her she owned it and fronted up. A quality presenter and reporter,' one fan said on Facebook.

'Good on her for being an Aussie and having a drink,' said another.

'I love how many times Karl started the morning show hungover and still p***ed, it's called being human.'

'Why? She did a great job over there and they had some fun to celebrate our success. Only human and no harm done. Cheers,' someone else commented.

Meanwhile, one fan added, 'She's the best. What a legend,' while others tipped her to be the next Prime Minister or crowned Australian of the Year.
