Originally written as a play, Daddio was penned by playwright Christy Hall, who also directed.

In the taxi ride, the driver (Penn) and passenger (Johnson) are strangers who discuss various subjects ranging from romantic love to childhood trauma.
Addressing the intimacy of the actor’s dialogue, Hall told Entertainment Weekly last year, ‘It’s easier, I think, to bare your soul to someone like a cabbie, because you know you’re never going to see them again.’
