The first trailer for the new cinematic adaptation of Sense And Sensibility has been released.

Director Georgia Oakley's take on Jane Austen's first published novel stars as Elinor, alongside Esmé Creed-Miles as her sister Marianne.

Caitríona Balfe also stars as Mrs. Dashwood whilst George MacKay and Frank Dillane play the lead male roles of Edward Ferrars and Mr. Willoughby respectively.

Rounding out the impressive cast is 14-year-old rising star Bodhi Rae Breathnach as the third Dashwood sister, who had recently won the part of Susanna, the eldest Shakespeare child in Oscar winner Hamnet when she was cast.

The first trailer faithfully follows Austen's story of the three Dashwood sisters and their mother as they are forced to leave Norland Park, the family estate in Sussex and move to a modest cottage in distant Devon after the death of their father.

There, they experience a new life on the fringes of the society they once basked in as well as becoming acquainted with new suitors.

Austen's novels have had a resurgence on screen in recent years with leading a 2022 version of Persuasion whilst writer Dolly Alderton has adapted Pride and Prejudice for an anticipated Netflix series starring Emma Corrin and Jack Lowden, heading to the streamer later this year.

Earlier this year Margot Robbie starred in and produced Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights, which stormed the Valentine's box office.

Emerald Fennell's decision to have Margot frolicking around the moors in a latex ballgown as Cathy in Wuthering Heights proved to be a hit with the Gen-Z audience, but it's not a path Sense and Sensibility will be following in.

Director Oakley has revealed one of the priorities for her adaptation was authenticity in her visuals:

'It was really important to me to feel like we're watching a story about human beings, and we can actually feel what it was like to live in the houses that they lived in—irrespective of whether we're talking about a moldy cottage on the edge of the sea or a huge, palatial country house,' she told Vogue.

'I'm a little bit sick of the sort of fetishization of that time period, and this idea that everybody spent, like, seven hours doing their hair and makeup, and everything was always pristine, and somebody was always waiting to help you out of your dress or whatever. I'm not a historian, but I don't buy all of it.'

Details like the age differences between her characters was also important to the filmmaker.

She was deliberate in her casting of Caitríona Balfe as Mrs. Dashwood, who doesn't appear to be years older than the women playing her daughters.

'That felt more historically accurate,' the filmmaker explained, 'and there's a lot of stuff in the book about how Willoughby and all the other men that set foot in the cottage couldn't help but fall in love with her.'

Fans posted excited comments as the trailer was unveiled on Thursday, with one declaring 'Oh it's perfect!'

'Counting down the days, looks really amazing and a great cast,' agreed another.

'Casting is a million times better than @netflix’s Pride and Prejudice,' decided another.

Others pointed out that the producing team of Working Title's Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner are behind Joe Wright's lauded 2005 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, leaving them hopeful for an equally successful adaptation.

Daisy shared a snap of herself enjoying a cocktail as she celebrated the release of the first trailer on Thursday

'It actually looks good, on top of that it's from the producers of pride and prejudice 2005 soooo , def gonna be good,' commented one excited fan.

Others though decided that Emma Thompson's 1995 version of Austen's debut could never be surpassed.

'I don’t think I am ready to replace Emma Thompson’s version,' wrote one. 'No thanks. I’ll stick with the 1995 version which is the best. No one can replace Alan Rickman,' agreed another.

Sense and Sensibility is in cinemas September 25.
