It was meant to be a romantic weekend away for The Only Way is Essex Star and her then-boyfriend after their relationship had been undergoing one of its regular tumultuous periods. But the mini break almost ended in tragedy.

Chloe had booked a cosy, secluded cabin in Sussex for a festive trip with former Love Island winner Jack back in December 2020. Chloe hoped that a few days away from home in Essex would give them a chance to reconnect after Jack’s struggles with addiction had caused serious issues between them.

But the day after the trip ended, Jack phoned Chloe to tell her that he had been hospitalised. A year later when he explained it on a podcast, she discovered the harrowing news that Jack had attempted to take his own life by overdosing on pills.

The pair had started dating when Chloe was just 18 in 2019. Her relationship with Jack, who is nine years older, was filled with drama - including seven breakups - until they finally split last September. While Jack has been open about his mental health struggles, Chloe has never spoken publicly about him for fear of tipping her ex-boyfriend over the edge. But now that Jack is finally confronting his addiction after checking into rehab, Chloe feels ready to tell her side of the story for the first time.

Through tears, Chloe, 25, exclusively revealed her torment to the Daily Mail. She said: ‘We went away together and the next day he tried to kill himself. I blamed myself.

‘We had a lovely time away together. I would have been one of the last people that he’d been around and I had no idea.’

Jack’s suicide attempt came three years after he won Love Island with former girlfriend Dani Dyer in 2018, with whom he split the £50,000 cash prize. This was also just months after he had been arrested for driving under the influence of drugs in his £35,000 Mercedes.

Although the charges were later dropped, the incident took a toll on Jack, now 34, who has been battling drug and alcohol addictions for years, having admitted blowing over £1 million on substances and gambling.

In 2024, Jack made a second attempt to take his own life after a booze binge, throwing himself off a balcony during another break with Chloe at a West Midlands hotel.

He survived the suicide attempt and was later taken into police custody to sober up, miraculously escaping the incident with only an ankle injury although it left him unable to walk for weeks.

In the same year, Jack also avoided a prison term, having pleaded guilty to speeding, driving with false plates and driving under the influence of cocaine. He was given an 18-month suspended sentence, which was extended by three months in March 2025 following a conviction for owning a dangerous dog.

Jack blames his downfall on his lack of routine after leaving Love Island, admitting his life quickly ‘spiralled out of control’. He criticised TV bosses for not giving contestants more guidance on how to handle fame and manage their money.

For Chloe, the fallout from their relationship has been devastating. ‘Watching someone you love and care for doing that is really hard. You feel quite helpless,’ she said.

‘There are so many things I tried to do, from weekends away to distract him to physically taking pills out of his hand.’

The Towie star explained that while most girls worry about whether their partner is cheating on them, her primary concerns were always about whether Jack had overdosed or harmed himself in other ways.

‘I spent a lot of time in the relationship upset and stressed. Sometimes we don’t bring out the best in each other, but fundamentally we do love each other. I think the addiction is very toxic and will bring out the toxic sides of everyone involved,’ she said.

After they split last September, Jack moved back in with his mum while Chloe moved into her own flat in Brentwood, Essex

As her relationship became rockier, Chloe quit Towie and launched her podcast, On The Record with Chloe B in November 2023, with celebrity guests lined up to join her each week. But Chloe has now revealed that the constant anxiety and pressure to look after Jack meant she couldn’t continue with work.

‘When I first left Towie, I had so many things lined up, but the truth is I couldn’t even do my podcast. I had a sponsor lined up but I had to refund them. I couldn’t go out because I was so worried about being away from the house. I couldn’t commit to anything.’

After being cast on Towie aged 18, alongside her mother Clare, Chloe became known for her fiery personality and bitter fallouts with former pals Amber Turner and Ella Rae Wise.

Chloe explained that over the course of her relationship with Jack ‘I was so low and in a terrible space. I don’t think people fully realised because I put on a brave face for social media, and possibly because of the strong character I was on Towie'.

Just five months after ending her relationship with Jack, Chloe told the Daily Mail: ‘I’m in therapy now, just trying to deal with certain situations. This isn’t me saying I’m in therapy because of Jack. I’m in therapy for a few things. I went from one scenario, with TOWIE, that was extremely intense, to a relationship that was up and down constantly. And Jack’s choices have had a really big lasting effect on me.’

After they split last September, Jack moved back in with his mum while Chloe moved into her own flat in Brentwood, Essex. She is now earning money making X-rated lingerie content on OnlyFans, although she has plans to start her podcast again and is hopeful for more TV opportunities in the future.

But Chloe has been clear that she has no plans to return to TOWIE, the show that started her career, admitting she ‘couldn’t hack the arguments anymore’.

And while Chloe tries to move on and find herself again, Jack has checked himself into rehab for alcohol and drug addiction treatment, after revealing he only has £20 to his name.

At the time, Jack said: ‘I have done drugs, I have done laughing gas, I have been so drunk that I’ve kissed a woman over Christmas and don’t even remember doing it. I am embarrassed, mortified… I feel like an idiot.’

The woman Jack referred to was Married At First Sight star Leisha Lightbody, who he was spotted kissing at Tulleys Farm’s Christmas light festival in Crawley last November. It was the first time Jack had been seen getting close to someone since his split from Chloe.

Care provider Steps Together saw Jack’s story and offered to fund his place at rehab. He is currently spending two months receiving £32,000 of treatment at Rainford Hall, Merseyside, with therapy six days a week plus physical exercise with a boxing coach.

Chloe explained: ‘I don’t stand by a lot of the choices he makes, and I don’t stand by the way he made me feel while we lived together, but it still happened. I still support him as a person.

‘I think that he’s been dealt a really sh** hand when it comes to his addiction.’

It is hard for Chloe to look back on her seven years with Jack, because while there were many bad times, she also has happy memories and had envisioned a serious future with him.

Chloe said: ‘I forgive him because you can’t go through life with hatred towards someone. I still love and care for him, but I’m still angry, and I wish that things had been different.’

When it comes to where they stand now with each other, Chloe isn’t ready to give a definite answer, but is hopeful that Jack’s current treatment in rehab will be the one that gets him clean and sober for good.

‘With regard to the relationship, I wouldn’t want to comment on it right now because he’s in a sensitive place, but I wouldn’t say we’re over or together. I’m just supporting him right now.’
