Byrne Shocks Awards Season with Low-Budget Film

This year's awards season is in full swing with the BAFTAs soon upon us and the Oscars less than a month away. 

It is fair to say this year's glitzy season has been dominated by two names, Jessie Buckley and Timothee Chalamet. 

Winning accolades at the Golden Globes and Critics Choice there was no surprises when both stars secured nominations for the BAFTAs and Oscars in their respective categories for their roles in Hamnet and Marty Supreme. 

Yet their is another name that fans are arguing should be heard a bit louder, Australian actress Rose Bryne. 

Most known for her part in the hit romcom Bridesmaids, Rose has earned herself a nomination at both prestigious awards ceremonies for her role in If I Had Legs I'd Kick You. 

It very much seems as though this film has gone under the radar in comparison to the noise surrounding both Hamnet and Marty Supreme, with Rose admitting the project was tiny, she said in her Golden Globes speech: 'We shot this movie in 25 days for like $8.50!'

Film campaigning is big business, with Hollywood studios and production companies hiring strategists and consultants to catch the attention of voters who could help them score a nod. 

From premiere outfits, actor on actor interviews, red carpet moments and 'method energy', there has been a huge push to promote both Hamnet and Marty Supreme. 

Yet in comparison, there has been little press surrounding the comedy-drama which sees Rose play Linda, a psychotherapist, who is stretched to her limits while trying to navigate her daughter's illness, an absent husband and a hostile relationship with her therapist (Conan O'Brien). 

Directed by Mary Bronstein, the film has secured Rose her first Oscar nomination, a recognition she never expected. 

Appearing on the Jimmy Kimmel Show last week, the host asked Rose: 'You must have known you were going to get nominated. I feel like I knew you were going to get nominated, so you must have known, right?'

'No. Oh my gosh, these things are so random and it was an extraordinary year for performance,' she began.

'Oh my gosh, there was so many wonderful performances and, absolutely not.  No, I would never think that. No, never.'

So why has If I Had Legs I'd Kick You gone under the radar in comparison to its contemporaries?

They penned: 'Rose Byrne had no actors on actors, roundtables, promos, grassroots campaign, a lone nominee for her cast and film, no best picture boost, a tiny budget, no nepo baby or overdue narrative yet she still managed to get recognised for every precursor and the Oscars. 

'Her performance is undeniable and she would be a fantastic, deserving winner.'

To begin with the film originally premiered over a year ago at the Sundance Film Festival before having its international premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival a month later. 

Therefore while most Oscar films will have a huge press tour leading up to its cinema premiere, If I Had Legs did not, with the film released by A24 in October with little worldwide fuss. 

The film is also produced by Josh Safdie, the director of Marty Supreme, and the filmmaker appears to have been much more wrapped up in the project with Timothee Chalamet. 

Released in the US on Christmas Day and on Boxing Day in the UK, Marty Supreme has secured Timothee his third Oscar nomination and after success at the Golden Globes and Critics Choice he remains the favourite to win. 

Yet for the past few months the actor has lived and breathed Marty Supreme.

Meanwhile at a pop-up event for the film in New York in November he arrived in a Marty Supreme zip up hoody surrounded by a team of men dressed in all black and donning bulbous orange masks meant to resemble ping pong balls.

Similarly in interviews the star explained he had described his acting approach as 'method energy' rather than method acting. 

While method acting involves an actor staying in role 24/7, Timothee explained he aims to keep the character's energy and tone alive.

The Liverpudlian musician is completely anonymous and always wears a mask or balaclava to conceal his true identity, and many fans speculated he has a striking resemblance to Timothee.

Chalamet boasts a striking resemblance to the viral music star and left fans shocked as they appeared in the music video side-by-side together.

During an appearance on the Heart FM Breakfast show, the actor refused to confirm or deny the rumours but seemed to tease the music video at the time as he said 'all would be revealed'. 

And in December Timothee shocked fans as he dropped a new music video alongside the mysterious rapper on the remix for the track 4 Raws.

The actor even rapped a few bars on the song and even referenced his girlfriend Kylie Jenner, 28, after recently putting split rumors to rest.

Alongside Marty Supreme, the media has been full of praise for Hamnet, with Jessie Buckley emerging as this year's shining star. 

The public love a rags to riches story and her Oscar nomination comes 17 years after her career began on British reality TV.

The Irish actress was just 18 when she appeared on BBC show I'd Do Anything in a bid to land the role of Nancy - narrowly being pipped to the post by Jodie Prenger.

Despite failing to win the show she has gone on to huge success and has finally hit the big time with her superb performance. 

Starring alongside fellow Irish actor Paul Mescal, the pair have been taking part in a plethora of interviews and appearing on multiple chat shows including The Graham Norton Show in the UK and The Kelly Clarkson show in the US. 

Winning her Golden Globe in January,  Jessie used her emotional speech to pay tribute to her co-star Paul, 30, showering the hunky actor with compliments.

At one point she referred to her co-star's heartthrob status, telling him: 'I bl**dy love you, man, and I know loads of other women do in this room too, but tough s**t!'

There has also been a real resurgence in 'actor on actor' interviews with Timothee and Gwyneth Paltrow appearing in a Vogue one earlier this year. 

Jessie and Paul also took part in the same format for Harper's Bazaar as they swore they 'actually do love each other'. 

Since her nomination it appears Rose has been doing a lot more press, appearing on main chat shows over in the US and she is set to appear at a live Q&A at Picture House in London this Saturday. 

Yet prior to her nomination the film appears to have slipped many people by.

Rose said that her husband, Bobby Cannavale could not make the ceremony because he was at a reptile expo buying a 'bearded dragon'.

Referencing the film's small budget she said in her Golden Globes speech: 'Thank you for believing in me and giving me this opportunity. We shot this movie in 25 days for like $8.50!' 

It seems Amanda's reaction to Rose's win gained more headlines than the win itself after fans noticed she appeared visibly disappointed when she lost the award

She continued: 'I didn't prepare anything, but - I didn't sing in this movie, guys. Thank you so much my fellow nominees, I just can't believe I'm here.

'Thank you so much, and thank you to A24 and to our brilliant producers, to Josh Safdie, Eli Bush, Ronnie Bronstein, Sarah Murphy, Ryan - everyone at A24 - thank you so much.

'Thank you for believing in me and giving me this opportunity. We shot this movie in 25 days for like $8.50!

'This is like a tiny film, so this is a huge thing to be up here. And my brother's my date! Thanks, George. Thanks to my mum and dad who bought Paramount Plus so they could watch the Golden Globes from Sydney.'

Rose beat out some strong competition for the award, including Cynthia Erivo for Wicked For Good, Kate Hudson for Song Sung Blue and Amanda Seyfried for The Testament of Ann Lee.

Yet it seems Amanda's reaction to Rose's win gained more headlines than the win itself. 

The actress, 40, appeared visibly disappointed when she lost the award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture to Rose.

In a viral clip from the evening, the Emmy-winning star, who was nominated for The Testament of Ann Lee, was caught grimacing briefly before forcing a smile, clapping and standing to applaud the winner.

But as Jessie and Rose go head to head at Sunday's BAFTAs, will Jessie take the accolade? Or will Rose prove not all films need an 'in your face' campaign.
