Beloved Melbourne lifestyle program returns after four-year hiatus with Nicky Buckley as host, delighting fans

TV veteran Nicky Buckley retuned to screens on Sunday to host a reboot of the much-loved lifestyle show Melbourne Weekender.

Nicky, 58, who is best known for Sale of the Century, is hosting the travel series alongside celebrity chef Gary Mehigan and Neighbours actress Bonnie Anderson.

The travel and holiday show has been off-air for four years after being cancelled back in 2019, but it has now returned to screens with a whole new hosting crew.

The first episode saw Bonnie, 29, visit an innovative bakery, while Gary, 57, sampled the culinary delights of Springvale, a hot spot for Vietnamese cuisine.

Seven New presenter Sonia Marinelli also featured in the season debut as she hosted an incredible trip to the NRMA Phillip Island Beachfront Holiday Park.

Fans rejoiced when the Channel Seven show premiered on Sunday night, taking to social media to praise the show after its debut episode aired.

They wrote: ‘Brilliant I saw all of it .. so good Nic’; ‘How good was this!!!’; ‘Great to see the show coming back.’

While others admitted they couldn’t wait to tune in, adding: ‘Looking forward to the show’; ‘Looks fab’; ‘LOVE! Can’t wait.’

A teaser trailer has also given a glimpse into what fans can expect from the series, including tips on Melbourne’s top eateries and the best country getaways in Victoria.

The preview also features host and AFL commentator Abbey Holmes trying out her surfing skills.

Meanwhile, first class cricket champ Brad Hodge is also set to take viewers on a tour of top rural destinations around Victoria.

Fans can also look forward to a regular ‘weekender’ segment on the series, which will see Nicky and model Nadia Bartel look out for the best destinations for weekends away.

‘I’m excited to be showcasing our beautiful eclectic Melbourne and Victoria and all that it has to offer,’ Nicky said in a statement.

‘I’ve found some real gems myself while shooting the series that I never knew existed,’ she continued.

The new season makes the first time Melbourne Weekender has been on-air since its final scenes aired in early 2020.

It first came to screen back in 2005, where it was anchored by Peter Mitchell before undergoing an array of format and host changes.

At the time of its cancellation in 2019, it was known as The Great Weekend with presenters including AFL champ Jack Riewoldt, Pete Lazer, Jane Bunn, Brian Taylor and Brooke Hogan.

The new season will air on Sundays on Seven and 7plus at 5.30.
