Following the medical emergency, she was transported to a hospital in Los Angeles.
At the time, a statement from her team revealed that she ‘was found unconscious in her home’ and ‘regained consciousness on the ambulance ride to an L.A. area hospital.’
Soon after, she was reported to be recovering while undergoing tests and ‘awake and in good spirits.’
Many initially assumed that Mitchell would never perform again, but intense physical therapy and practice eventually allowed to her to regain much of her previous skills.
She wowed audiences when she showed she was again a capable performer when she made an acclaimed appearance at the 2022 Newport Jazz Festival. Her most recent on-stage performance was in October at the Brandi Carlile and Friends show at the Hollywood Bowl.
Mitchell has also previously said she suffers from a condition called Morgellons disease, in which ‘fibers in a variety of colors protrude out of my skin like mushrooms after a rainstorm: they cannot be forensically identified as animal, vegetable or mineral,’ the singer told the Los Angeles Times in 2010.
However, the condition doesn’t have a known organic basis and is believed to instead to be a delusional psychiatric condition.
