The 32-year-old singer and actress kicked off her comeback by dropping Hate That I Made You Love Me, the lead single from her upcoming album, Petal.
But the tune landed with a thud, as fans on social media decried it as 'boring' and dubbed it one of her worst songs to date, while others found it so generic that they worried might have been involved in its creation.
It was a disappointing return to music for Grande, who has been focused on acting for much of the past few years with her role as Glinda in the hit films Wicked (2024) and its less-successful follow-up, last year's Wicked: For Good.

Grande – who fell in love with her when they costarred in the blockbuster films – made her last major musical statement two years ago with the release in March 2024 of her LP Eternal Sunshine.
On X, fans didn't hold back with their dislike for her new single.

'This is her most s***tiest song,' read one grammatically challenged pan.
'The song is so boring,' they added shortly after the single was made available for streaming and downloads.
Grande has been occupied in recent years with two Wicked films, which she starred in with Cynthia Erivo (pictured together in November 2025 in NYC). Her last album was Eternal Sunshine, released in March 2024

Some fans were particularly disappointed that the song was the first taste they got of Grande's upcoming eighth studio album, which will be released on July 31
One particularly harsh fan labeled Hate That I Made You Love Me 'Literally the worst song I've ever heard'
'Mama I love you but this is trash!!' agreed another user
Others agreed that the sound wasn't original, but instead they thought it could have been a leftover from Grande's previous album.
'So disappointed. Nothing new it could literally fit in the Eternal Sunshine album,' bemoaned an underwhelmed fan.
'Mama I love you but this is trash!!' added another unenthused listener.
Grande first announced the Hate That I Made You Love Me on May 8 with an Instagram post in which she called it 'one of my favorite songs i'll ever write.'
She added that it was 'produced by my favorite collaborators and dearest human beings in the world, the brilliant @ilya_music, the one and only max martin (and me).
'i simply cannot wait for it to be yours,' Grande concluded, before returning on May 18 to tease the release with a snippet of the song's instrumental backing track.
On Wednesday, Grande teased the upcoming video for Hate That I Made You Love Me, which will be released on Monday.
She shared a short clip featuring Barbarian star Justin Long speeding along in a car while peering into his rearview mirror.
Multiple fans said the track was 'mid' and wondered why it was chosen as lead single for Petals. Some even thought it's generic sound meant that it was AI generated

Days earlier, Grande teased the release on Monday of the video for Hate That I Made You Love Me, which stars Justin Long; pictured in November 2025 in NYC
Long suddenly has a look of fright on his face as he adjusts the mirror and sees Grande sitting in the back seat and staring at him.
The actor's presence was part of Grande's recent tradition of casting major stars to appear alongside her in her music videos.
In 2024, she celebrated the release of Eternal Sunshine by getting Penn Badgley to star with her in her video for The Boy Is Mine, while American Horror Story regular Evan Peters appeared in We Can't Be Friends.
She previously enlisted Beef actor Charles Melton for Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I'm Bored in 2019, and the same year she cast Mean Girls actor Jonathan Bennett in Thank U, Next.
