Alfie Boe has shed light on the residual pain of his divorce - admitting he suffers 'a daily battle to forgive himself'. 

The opera singer, 52, separated from his former wife Sarah, who hails from , in 2020 after 16 years of marriage before she moved back to the US, where the family once lived, with their children Grace, 17, and Alfie, 13. 

Ahead of the release of his new album, Alfie detailed the lasting trauma of the split, after which he spent five weeks in rehab following an overdose.

Speaking to The Independent: 'It's a battle every day learning how to forgive myself, to look at the way you were in the past, and try to become a better person.'

Last week, he confessed he 'couldn't tell the truth about he split', saying: 'People don't understand why the children [moved] away from me. It's just a shame when you can't tell the truth, and you take the higher ground'.

Alfie and Sarah had lived with their children in the Cotswolds since 2018, having previously lived as a family in the US.

But holed up together during the Covid pandemic in 2020, their troubles came brimming to the surface and they made the decision to separate.

Confirming the split at the time, Alfie said in a statement: 'After speculation about my marriage to Sarah ending, I can confirm that we have separated.

'I have nothing but love and respect for Sarah who's been an incredible partner and an amazing mother to our two beautiful children and everything is very amicable.'

Alfie now admits he is having to think about and grow from his mistakes'.  

He explained: 'If you don't think about your mistakes, you don't grow from them. That's been my philosophy over the years, to try and recover, because anybody who's gone through a separation and a divorce will tell you that it's a long road.' 

The Les Misérables star married Sarah in 2004 and they share two children, Grace, 12, and Alfred, eight

As well as discussing his marriage, he also discussed fears over his children growing up in the midst of growing disrest in America. 

He said: 'It's pretty tough to feel that, every day, your kids are on the other side of the world to you. I follow a lot of US news programmes, and it scares me [what's going on over there].'

Last year, Alfie confirmed his romance with Elizabeth Worth, 29, as he shared a photo of the couple enjoying a cosy date night at the Savoy Hotel in London. 

Alfie's new romance is the first since his secret fling with Ted Lasso star Hannah Waddingham in 2023.

The pair had known each other for years but were always in relationships, until 2022 when they both happened to be single and enjoyed dates in restaurants including Scott's in Richmond.

And according to The Sun, Hannah, 51, managed to 'sneak Alfie in backstage' during Eurovision to keep the relationship under wraps.

The source said: 'With Hannah's career massively in the ascendancy, she was keen to let her work, not personal life, do the talking so they deliberately kept things quiet.

'It was especially hard to keep things under wraps during the madness of Eurovision when all the spotlight was on her.

'But they managed to sneak Alfie in backstage and kept things low-key. Things have fizzled out but they remain on friendly terms.'
