Tom Hanks has been wandering around Sydney the past month, and has managed to largely fly under the radar.

The Forrest Gump actor, 69, popped into The Greg Chappell Cricket Centre in North Sydney on Monday - and locals barely recognised him.

The A-list Hollywood star was accompanied by his son, Truman Hanks, 30, who Tom shares with wife Rita Wilson, 69.

Store manager John Doughty didn't notice Tom at first, due to his 'laid-back' and almost 'messy' appearance, the Daily Telegraph reported.

'I didn't actually recognise him to start off with,' Doughty told the publication.

Hanks spent 'some time' in the store, and he and his son were the last two customers left in the shop by the end of their spree.

The two picked up a beach cricket set, some caps, wicketkeeping gloves, cricket balls and shorts, the Daily Telegraph reported.

Doughty said Hanks was a 'really nice guy' and a 'typical American' who was loud and animated during the outing.

Hanks and his son are understood to be travelling to Western Australia next, where they have plans to visit friends.

Sydneysiders got a taste of Hanks' famously down-to-earth personality last month as the Oscar winner filmed his latest movie, Greyhound 2.

Hanks was seen chatting to onlookers who had gathered outside the filming location of the World War II drama in Little Bay.

A small group of curious bystanders stopped by the film set after spotting lights and film equipment outside the Prince Henry Hospital Nursing and Medical Museum.

Crew members watched as Hanks, who was in costume for his role, including a white shirt, a bathrobe, and a short 1940s haircut, mingled with the crowd.

'Great to see Tom Hanks saying hello to the locals and having a little chat, very cool,' a staff member from Site Pizza Bar said on Facebook as they posted pictures of the moment.

The actor scripted the drama, which is set on board a US Navy destroyer battling the enemy in the North Atlantic during World War II.

The sequel, which Hanks also wrote, follows his character Commander Ernst 'Ernie' Krause as he heads to fight the war in the Pacific.

Hanks was seen arriving in Sydney in January with his entourage, including a very hunky bodyguard.

This is the Toy Story star's second trip to Australia in several years, as he was here in 2020 to film his role as Colonel Tom Parker in Baz Luhrmann's epic movie Elvis.

During his stay on Queensland's Gold Coast, he hired Brisbane-based Aaron Teece to be his personal chef.
