Robin Wright discusses reuniting with Tom Hanks for new film, recalling how it felt like no time had passed since their last collaboration in Forrest Gump 30 years ago.

Robin Wright has opened up about reuniting with the cast and crew of Forrest Gump, 30 years after the film came out.

The actress, 57, starred in the iconic film in 1984 as Jenny, the childhood best friend and love interest of Forrest, played by Tom Hanks.

The Oscar-winning film depicts several decades in the life of Forrest Gump, a naïve and slow-witted yet athletically prodigious native of Alabama. 

Robin and Tom, 67, have reunited on a new film, alongside Forrest Gump director Robert Zemeckis and writer Eric Roth.

The film, called Here, is expected to be released this year and also stars Paul Bettany, Kelly Reilly, Leslie Zemeckis, Michelle Dockery and Gwilym Lee.

Discussing working with Tom, Robert and Eric again, Robin gushed that the experience was ‘incredible’ and felt as thought ‘no time had passed’.

Appearing on This Morning on Monday, she said: ‘We just worked again together, Tom and I just did a movie called Here.

‘The whole band got back together, Robert Zemeckis directed it, Eric Roth wrote it. It was incredible, reuniting 30 years later, it was like no time had passed. There was nothing awkward about it.’

Trying to remain tight-lipped about the plot of the film, she teased: ‘It’s never been done before, the way it is shot, which is it’s original content. 

‘But it’s called Here because everything happens over all periods of time here. It’s very different.’

Here is based on the graphic novel of the same name by Richard McGuire, and is said to cover the events of a single room and its inhabitants spanning from the past to well into the future.

The film has already caused a stir, as it uses new hyperrealistic AI technology in order to digitally de-age and face-swap the actors in real time, instead of through post-production.

Robin also discussed the impact of films like Forrest Gump and her other cult classic film, The Princess Bride.

She said: ‘You don’t know what the film is going to be when you’re shooting them – what the response is going to be like or its success. And you do feel very blessed to have been a participant in two very iconic films.’

Speaking specifically about the enduring success of Forrest Gump, she admitted: ‘We had no idea [whether it would be a success]. What we felt shooting it and what I think you see in the film, was that it was sentimental without being cheesy.’

Robin will next be seen in dark fantasy film Damsel, which is set to be released on Netflix on Friday.

She plays the evil Queen Isabelle, opposite Millie Bobby Brown in the lead role of Elodie, a dutiful damsel who agrees to an arranged marriage with a handsome prince.

However, she soon learns that the royal family have recruited her as a sacrifice to repay an ancient debt.

Robin discussed the film, explaining: ‘It’s not the conventional fairytale we’re all used to. It’s basically a female empowerment movie and Millie is amazing in it. 

‘It’s a survival story about a damsel in distress who doesn’t get rescued – she rescues herself.’

She admitted that playing the villain was ‘so much fun’ and added: ‘It definitely gives you more layers to play with.’

Robin praised her co-star, Stranger Things’ Millie, 20, for her work in the film and all her success at such a young age.

She gushed: ‘It is fascinating to watch somebody  from that generation, the confidence and strength that these young girls and boys have. 

‘I was very impressed by her acting skills and look at what she’s accomplished, at 20 years old. She’s a power house.’
