Charli XCX has fully admitted she’s ‘not a great singer’ so it came as no surprise for fans that she used Auto-Tune to automatically measure and correct her pitch during both of her musical performances on Saturday Night Live.
The 32-year-old pop star – who pulled double duty hosting NBC’s long-running sketch show – first took to the 30 Rock stage to rap-sing her hit 360 against a neon-green ‘Brat Wall.’
Viewers took to the comments section under SNL’s YouTube to express their opinions on Charli XCX (born Charlotte Emma Aitchison) getting an audio advantage on her vocals.
‘This is definitely not a song for the SNL stage,’ user @_gokceada admitted.
‘And for people are saying her vocals suck, it’s just the style of the song. She has plenty of songs that prove she can sing, but 360 is a fun song, and [there] are other strong and emotional on Brat and her previous albums.’
User @a1d4nnn agreed: ‘Yeah, I like 360 but it’s definitely not an SNL stage song.’

‘”Vocals that suck” is not a song style,’ user @bufordhighwater9872 wrote.
‘The most talented and musically credible thing on the stage was the Lou Reed t-shirt. It’s okay though, there are talentless hacks to whom I enjoy listening, as well. There’s nothing wrong with it. Just don’t elevate it to something it isn’t.’
Meanwhile, user @ashleytaveras9035 commented: ‘Charli singing in auto tune is Brat!’
‘Her vocals are so strong. It’s not easy to make extreme Auto-Tune sound good,’ user @pooka994 wrote.
‘If you’re pitchy it very quickly goes to s*** lol!’
On SNL’s X account, user @funmusikgirl tweeted: ‘Can she sing without auto tune? Lol’

The nine-time Grammy nominee – who was originally discovered in 2008 on Myspace – changed into all-black attire to sing her track Sympathy is a Knife in a strobe-flashing performance in front of a ‘PARTY’ backdrop.
‘All the time, like, I never am not singing with Auto-Tune. Unless I’m, like, doing karaoke, which I actively don’t do for this reason,’ Charli XCX admitted on Tape Notes Podcast in June.
‘My ear is so used to leaning in…that’s why I only do rap at karaoke because people are like, “Isn’t she a singer?” And I’m like, “Well, yeah but, like, I drink and I smoke and I use Auto-Tune – those three things. Yeah I’ve gotten so lazy because I sing with Auto-Tune.’
The half-Indian Brit continued: ‘Anytime I’m cutting vocals, I’m using Auto-Tune. Like, you know you get lazy, like, you really really get lazy because you kind of like can relax into a note rather than being super on. I mean there are some amazingly technical singers who do sing with autotune who are still like pitch perfect but like that’s not me.’
Charli XCX – whose stage name was her MSN Messenger alias – is next scheduled to perform this Saturday inside HERE at Outernet in London.
