Cyndi Lauper, 70, stuns in yellow suit at LA screening

Cyndi Lauper put on a radiant display in an eye-catching ensemble as she attended the star-studded screening of her documentary, Let The Canary Sing, in L.A. on Tuesday.

The Time After Time songstress, 70 – who made an appearance at her Hand and Footprint Ceremony at Hollywood’s TCL Chinese Theatre earlier in the day – joined other celebrities on the red carpet during the event.

The Brooklyn-born performer turned heads in a double-breasted, yellow blazer and a pair of matching trousers.

She additionally slipped into a pair of open-toed, silver heels and easily carried a shiny, silver clutch bag in her hand to hold a few items she needed during the festivities.

Lauper accessorized the look with a pair of glittering, silver earrings as well as a few rings on each of her hands.  

Her makeup was glammed up, and comprised of a layer of mascara to her lashes as well as a black, winged eyeliner. 

A smoky shadow was also added around her eyes, while a bold red tint was worn on her lips for a finishing touch. 

Cyndi struck a variety of poses upon arriving to the venue to better show off her outfit ahead of the screening. 

Let The Canary Sing – which was directed by Alison Ellwood – officially premiered on Paramount+ on Tuesday. 

The premise is: ‘The journey of Cyndi Lauper, a one-of-a-kind artist, iconic performer, and trailblazing activist,’ per an official IMDB synopsis.   

‘Over the years I’ve been asked to do a documentary about my life and work, but it never felt like the right time. Until now,’ Lauper expressed, per Deadline. 

‘When I first met Alison Ellwood, I knew right away I could trust her to tell my story honestly, which was incredibly important to me, and she succeeded in that.’

The Girls Just Want To Have Fun hitmaker added, ‘I’d like to thank Alison, the producers and all of the amazing documentary participants who agreed to be interviewed.’

In regards to what led to her to make a documentary, Lauper humorously told The Hollywood Reporter last year in 2023, ‘My agent, my manager, my lawyer.’ 

‘This was a perfect vehicle, that’s all. I just think a documentary sometimes helps show people how, because everybody starts out with somebody saying, “What are you going to do that for? Don’t do that. Get a real job.”‘ 

‘Or maybe they don’t say that anymore. I don’t know. Maybe parents don’t say that. But it’s so amazing when you get to a point in your life where, when you go to the family gathering, and everybody used to question you…’

She continued, ‘And by the end, they want to know what you’re doing and you try and explain, and they always say, “Well, good luck with your work.”” 

‘So instead of being disheartened, it’s good to learn about someone else and see how they made their good steps and bad steps.’ 

Cyndi added, ‘Eventually you get to where you’re supposed to be anyway, and certain people come into your life that change it and help you in ways you didn’t think they could.’ 

Other celebrities made an appearance at the screening, including Emily Deschanel who wowed in a short-sleeved, blue-patterned dress. 

The Bones actress slipped into a pair of closed-toed, black pumps that were secured with thick straps that wrapped around her ankles.

Her hair was parted to the side, and cascaded down in light waves to brush past the tips of her shoulders. 

The beauty added a chunky, gold bracelet on her right wrist as well as mini earrings and flashy rings to accessorize her ensemble. 

During a photo session, Deschanel crossed paths with Cyndi and the pair paused for a memorable snap together. 

Margaret Cho donned a red and white-patterned dress with a layered skirt and opted for a pair of open-toed, nude pumps. 

The comedian layered the outfit with a cropped, dark gray blazer and was seen gently carrying an adorable pup in her arms. 

She also joined both Emily and Cyndi to take photos together on the red carpet before the screening commenced. 

Lauper was supported by her sister, Elen, who sported a blue button up as well as a tan-colored blazer and matching trousers. 

The siblings flashed cheerful smiles towards the camera as they posed together, with the songstress draping her arm over Elen’s shoulders.  

Earlier on Tuesday, Lauper made a milestone as she attended her Hand and Footprint Ceremony at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. 

She donned an all-black ensemble as she took part in the special event, and received moving tributes from fellow music artists, Cher and Bebe Rexha. 

The Believe singer recalled performing Lauper’s track, If I Could Turn Back Time, back in 2002. ‘I’m singing it and I’m really feeling good about myself, and she comes out and blows me away. And we’ve been friends ever since,’ Cher said, per NBC. 

‘Like there are singers. I’m a pretty good singer. Cyndi is a great singer. She’s a genius singer. Okay? She is and she’s a fabulous person and she’s talented.’ 

Cher further gushed, ‘I love her, and she’s a wonderful, wonderful, crazy, crazy person…’ 

Rexha also had sweet words for Cyndi and stated, ‘It is such an incredible honor to be here today to celebrate the illustrious career of a true icon, Cyndi Lauper.’ 

‘Her legacy as an artist, singer, songwriter, actress and activist will now forever be enshrined in Hollywood history, right here in front of the Chinese Theatre. To say that Cyndi is someone that I’ve idolized my entire life is an understatement, you guys.’

She added, ‘I remember growing up as a little girl in New York City, and I remember dancing around to one of my mother’s favorite artists – who was Cyndi – and she quickly became one of my favorite artists.’ 

‘And not only was I drawn to her infectious melodies and her edgy style, but it was most importantly her unapologetic nature to be her true self, her true authentic self.’

Bebe continued, ‘She helped to empower me, not only as an artist, but most importantly, as a woman.’ 

On Monday, Lauper also announced her final tour – which is called the Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Farewell Tour. 

The tour includes 23 dates and will kick off later this year on October 18 in Montreal and will come to an end on December 5 in Chicago. 

During an interview AP at the Hand and Footprint Ceremony on Tuesday, Lauper opened up about the decision to go on a final tour. 

‘Because this is the strongest I am, and in five years I don’t know where I’m gonna be. I still do my yoga…and you know, I work out, I do yoga, I do [physical therapy], I do vocal exercises.’ 

‘But, you know, I’m also working on theater stuff, like Broadway shows. And that takes a lot,’ the singer explained. 

‘So, I figure I’m not gonna wait. I’m gonna do it now, because now is a good time and celebrate with everybody just one last time in an arena tour which I haven’t done on my own in…since the 80s.’

While current tour dates are in North America, Cyndi expressed, ‘My fans have been all over the world. You know, it takes a lot. But this is gonna be it.’ 

‘I’ll go all over, I’ll go North America, I’ll do Europe, I’ll do Asia, I’ll do Australia and then South America. So, I’m gonna try to get the hemispheres in there and say goodbye and thank you…’
