Zac Efron has revealed he was ‘scarred for life’ by his ‘first kissing scene’ because of a disastrous decision he made beforehand.
The 36-year-old had his first onscreen kiss as a teen actor on the TV show Summerland in 2004, two years before he became a star on High School Musical.
His love interest was played by his fellow teenager Kay Panabaker, the younger sister of onetime Disney Channel star Danielle Panabaker.
‘I was real young. It was my first kissing scene,’ Zac explained to Joey King, his co-star in the new Netflix movie A Family Affair.
‘It was on a show called Summerland and I didn’t realize that eating fish right before that was probably not a good idea,’ he told Joey for Elle.

‘And I kissed my co-star and she went: “Did you eat fish for lunch?” And everybody laughed,’ he remembered. ‘Yeah, I was scarred for life.’
Kay herself has remarked that her romantic scene with Zac ‘was weird, because I was 13 and he was 16, and so it was kissing an older boy, and it was my first kiss ever.’
She added: ‘And it was totally embarrassing in front of the whole crew, who I thought we were – they were all like my dads.’
However she spared a few warm words for Zac, saying he ‘was so nice and so sweet and he still is,’ in an interview with the LA Teen Festival.
Summerland was co-created by Full House star Lori Loughlin, who led the cast as woman trying to look after her newly orphaned niece and nephews.
Kay played the niece, while her brothers were portrayed by Jesse McCartney and Nick Benson and Zac featured as her love interest.
The drama series lasted for two seasons on The WB from 2004 to 2005 – and just one year after it got canceled, Zac was catapulted to fame in High School Musical.
Zac played the jock Troy Bolton in the High School Musical movies, with Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Tisdale as characters competing for his romantic attention.

Ashley has divulged that her worst-ever onscreen kiss was the one she shared with Zac on the Disney Channel sitcom The Suite Life Of Zack & Cody.
‘I had to kiss Zac Efron on The Suite Life of Zack & Cody, and it’s the worst because I am so close to him, and he’s like my brother,’ she told Elle.
Earlier this year, Zac revealed the story behind his first real-life kiss, disclosing that it took place in ‘a tree house’ but not naming the girl involved.
‘We played spin the bottle. It was her birthday, and a bunch of us climbed up to the tree house. There were candles – it was pretty cool,’ he told W.

A wrench gets thrown into Zara’s life when she wanders into Brooke’s bedroom and is confronted with the sight of her boss and her mother having sex.
A Family Affair was directed by Richard LaGravanese, who previously helmed such classics as The Bridges Of Madison County and The Fisher King.
He also wrote the screenplay for the 1996 romantic comedy The Mirror Has Two Faces, which Barbra Streisand directed and starred in opposite a formidable cast including Jeff Bridges, Pierce Brosnan, Lauren Bacall and Mimi Rogers.
A Family Affair was less well-received than those earlier projects, earning the disdain of the critics to the tune of 39% on Rotten Tomatoes.
