Wynne Evans’ friends ‘insist talk of his career ending is “premature” and defend his inappropriate jokes as “schoolboy comedy”‘ while his Strictly co-stars ‘rally around him’ in wake of his withdrawal from the live tour

Wynne Evans’ friends have allegedly insisted that his career has not been destroyed and claimed his ‘spit-roast’ slur was only ‘schoolboy comedy’, after he withdrew from the Strictly Come Dancing live tour on Tuesday.

The opera singer, 53, has been embroiled in controversy after he was caught on film by The Mail on Sunday this month making a vile sexual comment about one of the show’s female hosts.

He has since agreed with the BBC to step away from the tour and any other work commitments to ‘take some time out’ as the inappropriate jibe looks set to sink his entire career.

Wynne is taking a break from his BBC Wales radio show with comedian Robin Morgan, who has covered for him in the past, presenting in his place.

He is also reportedly trying to salvage his infamous spot with Go Compare, whom he has worked with since 2009, as he risks losing his six-figure salary.

And the Beeb has faced criticism from viewers over the decision to continued airing his new show All At Sea, which he co-hosts with Gavin & Stacey star Joanna Page.

However according to reports, his pals are insistent that Wynne will weather the storm of the current scandal and will see his career recover.

According to The Mirror, one friend has defended the star from the backlash he’s received, by blaming it on Wynne’s ‘terrible sense of humour’.

They told the publication: ‘At the end of the day, he has been a bit of an oaf and made a stupid mistake but does he deserve such hatred?

‘Yes, using the term spit-roast was absolutely wrong, and he realises this. His problem is that he is a joker and he continually wants to play to the crowd. It’s just schoolboy comedy.’

The pal added: ‘Talk of his career ending is premature – at the end of the day, his radio show is very popular, and he is very much liked.’

MailOnline has contacted representatives for Wynne for comment.

According to The Sun, he returned home to Wales on Tuesday to be with his friends and family, while the BBC have put him in touch with a welfare officer and his Strictly co-stars are rallying around him.

A source told the publication: ‘Wynne is surrounded by people who are supporting him and the BBC have assigned him someone to talk to. He is incredibly apologetic and knows what he says was misjudged.’

While they added: ‘Wynne’s Strictly co-stars have all rallied and are backing him all the way. They all love Wynne and have a lot of time for him. Janette has nothing but affection for Wynne. They just want him to be alright.’

Professional dancer Katya Jones, who was partnered with Wynne on Strictly last year, showed her support for him on her Instagram Stories as she urged fans to ‘show humanity and consideration’ and said she would miss Wynne.

While his brother Mark Llewelyn Evans has expressed his ‘unwavering support’ for the star, insisting Wynne has a ‘heart of gold’.

In a statement posted on X, he wrote: ‘As a brother, I want to express my unwavering support for him during this challenging time.’

Mark, a children’s book author and baritone performer, added: ‘Wynne has a heart of gold and the courage of a lion, paired with a talent that outshines most. His charisma and humour have brought joy to countless people. @BBCRadioWales @BBCTV.’

In January the pair were left devastated when they shared the shock news that their brother Huw, the oldest of the three, had passed away.

Wynne wrote: ‘I’m so sad to say that my gorgeous eldest brother has passed away. My big brother was my hero and my inspiration. Huw my darling I will miss you so much and am so glad I got to have you with me all my life.’

A source told MailOnline the break was sparked by the furore surrounding his comment, plus the fact he is still mourning his older brother Huw, combined with the physical toll of being on the road.

‘He’s had a tough time with the death of his brother and people should give him some slack, he is going to take this time off to do some self reflection.

‘He has a lot of support from a lot of the backstage dancers. It’s been a really sad ending to what has been a really fun tour.’

His Strictly co-stars stars were said to be rallying around the Welshman on his birthday, after the BBC confirmed he’s been granted leave from his radio show.

Wynne was comforted by his co-stars on his 53rd birthday on Monday, as they’re mindful of his fragile mental health.

An insider said: ‘Wynne is being supported by his co-stars, they’re making a big push to ensure he’s ok as they’re worried about his mental health.

‘He’s had a tough few days and with it being his birthday today, they’re making a real effort to show he’s not alone.’

It was revealed on Tuesday, Wynne has broken up from his girlfriend Liz Brookes, 50, who’s been credited for upping his morale after his painful divorce.

He previously revealed he hit ‘rock bottom’ in the midst of his depression, stemming from the end of his marriage to Welsh violinist Tanwen, the mother of his two children, in 2016.

They pair had first met on a British Youth Orchestra course, where Wynne was starring in a production of Robin Crusoe.

After the divorce he was forced to leave the family home he shared with their kids daughter Ismay, and son, Taliesin – moving into a ‘sad’ derelict house with boarded up windows in Cardiff as that was all he could afford at the time.

He said in a podcast interview last year that he house was in such a bad state when he moved in that the children even had to sleep in tents when they came to visit.

Speaking on The Starting Line podcast with Rich Leigh, he said: ‘It was a really sad house because it was derelict, and I moved here after a divorce.

‘I didn’t want to move here, I wanted to stay married. So I bought it and it just became sad. It was a sad place.’

The Go Compare star has now hired the same crisis PR expert tasked with saving the career of another of Strictly’s outcasts, Graziano Di Prima.

He has taken on veteran publicist Mark Borkowski, who was hired last year by pro dancer Graziano, 30, after he was sacked by Strictly for verbally and physically abusing his celebrity partner Zara McDermott.

He instructed the Italian hunk to lie low and protect his mental health and a similar strategy is likely to be deployed on Wynne to ease the crisis surrounding him.

The Mail On Sunday revealed last week that Wynne had made a vile joke about Strictly star Janette Manrara.

Wynne was recorded crudely suggesting a three-way sex session with presenter Janette, using the hugely demeaning term ‘spit roast’.

In the MoS film, Wynne stands in the middle of a line-up of 20 celebrities and dancers as Janette, who hosts the TV spin-off Strictly Come Dancing: It Takes Two, is summoned to join them. As she approaches, Wynne warns her with a grin: ‘Not too close to Jamie [Borthwick]!’

He then pulls a suggestive face at the actor, behind Janette’s back, as she moves between them. It is at this point that Wynne makes his disgusting joke at her expense.

Seconds later, her dancer husband Aljaz Skorjanec, who was standing nearby, asks her: ‘Darling, are you OK?’ She replies curtly: ‘Yep.’

Janette’s spokesperson said the host had been ‘unaware of this comment by Wynne’ which was audible to our reporter filming with a mobile phone 20 yards away.

Following the widespread revulsion caused by the revelations in the Mail story, Wynne was replaced on his morning radio show on Monday by comedian Robin Morgan, who also stood in for Wynne while he appeared on Strictly last year.

A source told MailOnline the break was sparked by the furore surrounding his comment, plus the fact he is still mourning his older brother Huw, combined with the physical toll of being on the road.

‘He’s had repeated warnings about his behaviour and told to rein it in. He’s not been taking it in, in this day and age the BBC have to be seen taking action and safeguard everyone,’ an insider has now told The Sun.

‘He’s had a tough time with the death of his brother and people should give him some slack, he is going to take this time off to do some self reflection.
