Filmmaking duo Anthony and Joseph Russo spoke about the possibility of bringing Robert Downey Jr. back to fill his old role as Tony Stark, also known as Iron Man, during a new interview with Gamesradar+.
The directors worked with the 59-year-old actor in several entries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and his character was killed off at the end of the 2019 blockbuster hit Avengers: Endgame.
The filmmakers stated that, although the actor was enthusiastic about returning to the part, they were unsure of how his reentry to the MCU would play out.
Anthony began by stating that he did not ‘know how they would do it. I don’t know what the road to that would be.’
Joe went on to add that he felt as Stark’s death at the end of Avengers: Endgame ‘closed that book.’

The filmmaker concluded by stating that Marvel’s creative executives would ultimately be the ones with the ability to bring the character back.
The entertainment industry figure remarked: ‘It would be up to them to figure out how to reopen it.’
Downey Jr. stated that he would be enthusiastic about returning to his old role during a recent interview with Esquire, where he stated that he would ‘happily’ put on his armored suit again.
The Tropic Thunder star went on to describe the role of Tony Stark as ‘too integral a part of my DNA’ and added that the part ‘chose me.’
The Academy Award-winning performer concluded by speaking about the influence held by Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige.
‘I always say, Never, ever bet against Kevin Feige. It is a losing bet. He’s the house. He will always win,’ he said.
Downey Jr. made his debut as Tony Stark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Iron Man, which premiered in 2008.
The Natural Born Killers actor went on to reprise his role in ten further entries in the MCU, and he made a cameo in the 2008 feature The Incredible Hulk.

Feige shot down the idea of Downey Jr. reprising his old role during an interview with Vanity Fair, where he stated that Marvel Studio’s creative team felt as if the conclusion of Iron Man’s story provided a satisfying end for the character.
The entertainment industry executive stated: ‘We are going to keep that moment and not touch that moment again.’
‘We all worked very hard for many years to get to that, and we would never want to magically undo it in any way,’ he added.
