Whoopi Goldberg broke down in tears on Wednesday’s episode of The View as she reunited – and performed – with the cast of Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit and promised fans that a third movie would definitely make it’s way to the big screen.
The latest instalment of the ABC daytime show saw Whoopi, 68, reminisce with the cast of the much-loved sequel as they marked the film’s 30th anniversary with an incredible live performance of Joyful, Joyful.
Whoopi wasted no time in transforming into her character of Sister Mary Clarence and even donned a nun’s habit as she made a very important announcement and told viewers: ‘Don’t forget, Sister Act 3 is in the works. The script is in and I can’t wait for the day I can say, “Come along for the ride,” because we got that green light!’
The mother-of-one was flanked by Kathy Najimy, Sheryl Lee Ralph, and Wendy Makkena as she shared the exciting news, and was overcome with emotion just moments before as the ladies rushed to comfort her.
Viewers tuning in at home absolutely loved the reunion and took to X, formerly known as Twitter to share their thoughts, with one person writing: ‘BRAVA BRAVO!!! THANK YOU!! #TheView THE INJECTION OF JOY WE NEEDED!!!’

Another person tweeted: ‘I’ve rewound this three times, y’all. I needed this cleanser. There is so much gloom and doom in the world. Plus, everyone is genuinely enjoying themselves, and Whoopi looks like a proud mom. You rarely see her emotional. This was good!’
And a third fan commented: ‘I’m CRYING! OMG! SISTER ACT 2! 30 year anniversary! I didn’t even cry during the actual movie!’ and a fourth added: ‘Joyful Joyful. Yes it is!! Whoopi is emotional and so am I.’
Someone else claimed: ‘[The View’s] Sister Act reunion got the happy tears flowing! Such a feel good episode! #TheView,’ and another person admitted: ‘I am inconsolable. Absolutely inconsolable. This movie means -so- much to me, I can’t even begin to put into words how -perfect- this was. My heart needed this so tremendously today. Thank you.’
The latest update comes after DailyMail.com exclusively revealed back in November 2023 that Whoopi is keen to cast Jennifer Hudson in Sister Act 3.
The long-awaited project was greenlit in December 2020, and Whoopi was reportedly keen to ‘figure out’ the finances and ‘move fast’ with the production – which hit a ‘stoplight’ owing to the SAG-AFTRA strikes.
‘One person that Whoopi would like to add to the film is Jennifer Hudson, especially after seeing what Jennifer did with the character when she did Sister Act for Halloween last year on her show,’ a source told DailyMail.com at the time.
‘It would be a no-brainer to get Jennifer, Whoopi would really love for that to happen.’
Indeed, Jennifer dazzled The View cohost – and Sister Act fans – last year when she dressed up as Whoopi’s famous character to deliver a breathtaking medley from the film franchise.

Whoopi couldn’t hold her tears in as she hugged various members of the cast following the epic singalong
At the time, Whoopi had nothing but praise for the star’s tribute and joked on The View that she might lose her role to the EGOT winner.
The insider continued: ‘The new Sister Act is going to happen. They have the idea, they have Whoopi. Once the strikes are done, they are ready to make the film for the fans and a new generation.
‘They aren’t at a dead end; they are more at a stoplight. They have to figure out money, and who to cast but Whoopi is very anxious to get the ball rolling and she feels once Hollywood gets back to work, Sister Act will then move fast.’
