Whoopi Goldberg appeared to be flirting with David Duchovny when he appeared on The View on Monday, which left him ‘blushing,’ according to panelist Sara Haines.

During a discussion about the TV show The X-Files – in which David, 63, played FBI agent Fox Mulder – Sara, 46, decided to ask the actor about a 1999 song by Bree Sharp which was named after him and featured some very famous faces in a music video.

Whoopi, 68, was one the celebrities who decided to take part and appeared alongside her former cohost Rosie O’Donnell as they lip-synced to the lyrics: ‘David Duchovny, why won’t you love me?’

After a clip was shown, Sara asked David if it was true that he sings the song to himself when he’s driving, to which he replied: ‘Not just in the car, I sing that to myself everywhere I go,’ before revealing that it was his friend, Joe Blake, who found the song and sent the cassette to him.

He explained: ‘I was listening to that in my car with the window rolled down, and I think I might have had one or two interactions with people seeing me singing in my car.’

Referring to how the homemade video, which also stars Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Jerry Springer and Pamela Anderson, came about, David revealed: ‘What happened was there were a couple of PAs on the The X-Files who made that video as a gift for me, I wasn’t involved in that. And they asked all these people who were generous enough to lip sync to a song they’d never heard.’

Whoopi confirmed this was true and said: ‘Yeah, I’m still asking the question!’ as the panel laughed before Sara pointed out: ‘He’s blushing!’

Elsewhere in the interview, host Sunny Hostin was shocked when she misunderstood David’s comments about aliens during a discussion about The X-Files.

‘You did not think it would last more than one season, why?’ Sunny, 55, asked as David replied: ‘Let me think back. I thought… well I wasn’t necessarily interested in the subject matter myself.’

Sunny couldn’t believe what she was hearing and blurted out: ‘You don’t believe in UFOs? You don’t believe in things like that?’ which led David to explain: ‘It’s not that I don’t believe in them, I just wasn’t that interested in them, so I’m sure they exist.

‘I also thought if this is about aliens, you’ll either see them and then the show’s over, or you won’t see them and then people will get frustrated and tune out. So I didn’t think it had legs, and I was obviously completely wrong,’ the actor added.

The X-Files, which also starred Gillian Anderson as FBI Special Agent Dana Scully,  was a highly successful science fiction series and David starred in a total of 191 episodes.

Earlier this month, the actor admitted that he regrets ‘working a lot’ when his two children with ex-wife TĂ©a Leoni were young.

‘I was certainly working a lot when my kids were young. That’s something I might have changed,’ he said during an interview with People.

‘But then again, it’s also cool to model a person who’s engaged with their life for a kid. It might not be the best thing to just devote your entire existence to your kid either, so it could go either way….

‘I don’t have access to the other road that could have been traveled. I just have the one that I did travel, so certainly not a perfect parent, but I love my kids. I love my kids so, so much.’

He added: ‘I felt unconditionally loved by my children
and I love them unconditionally. Just them being in the world has taught me that feeling from both sides, and I don’t think there’s anything deeper or more meaningful than that.

‘I’ll always feel inadequate [as a parent]. Maybe I was a good parent, because my kids are great people, and they probably want to think of me as a good parent, too. They don’t want to think of me as a failure. I’m sure I’ve done bad things, I’m sure I’ve made mistakes, but we all have. So, I try and give myself more of a break.’
