Victoria’s Special Gift for David on His Knighthood Revealed

Victoria’s Special Gift for David on His Knighthood Revealed

It’s a dream that Sir David Beckham never thought would come true.

After years of disappointment, the former England football captain will today travel to Windsor Castle to be knighted. And, if the rumours are true, the honour will be bestowed by the King himself.

Smiling proudly next to him will be his wife Victoria – and she has given David a very special gift to mark his investiture.

The Daily Mail can reveal that the fashion designer has made her husband the suit which he will wear as he is honoured for his services to sport and charity.

It is not only the first time that Victoria, 51, has created a man’s morning suit complete with a tailcoat – but the first time she has ever made David, famed for his fashion choices, any item of clothing.

The secret project began in June when the couple learned that the former Manchester United star would be knighted in the King’s Birthday Honours.

‘David teases Victoria that she never makes him any clothes,’ a friend of the couple told the Daily Mail. ‘So when they found out in the spring that David was going to get his big day at Windsor later in the year, Victoria decided that she had enough time to make it happen.

‘She has never done anything like this before and she was aware it would be time-consuming but Victoria knew the investiture would be some way off,’ my source explained.

‘Victoria got to work, designing the three-piece suit and, as she doesn’t do anything by halves, she threw herself into it and made sure it was absolutely perfect.

‘The fact that David is wearing a Victoria Beckham outfit will make a special day even more special.’

The soon-to-be Sir David, who turned 50 in May, has been for several fittings at his wife’s atelier in her west London offices and is said to be ‘extremely happy’ with the results.

Until now the fashionista’s only foray into men’s clothing has been to make a handful of more casual outfits for their youngest son Cruz, 20, to wear to her Paris Fashion Week shows.

Victoria’s move into men’s fashion comes just weeks after the launch of her three-part Netflix series, Victoria Beckham, which reveals what went on behind the scenes of the clothing and beauty empire she began in 2008.

During one scene in the show, Victoria is seen handing out outfits for her 2024 runway in Paris, which prompted David to ask why she never makes him anything. ‘You never ask,’ she replied.

The documentary also addressed the financial difficulties Victoria, who was awarded an OBE in 2017, endured as her business lost millions of pounds and had to be propped up with her husband’s funds.

David will also be joined today by his beloved mother Sandra, who will remain loyal to the family business by wearing a VB-designed frock, and his father, Ted, who split from his wife in 2002 after 33 years of marriage. It will be their first trip to such an occasion as, back in 2003 when Becks got his OBE, he took his maternal grandparents Joe and Peggy, who have since passed away.

But David’s beloved nan and grandad won’t be far from his thoughts as he stands before King Charles today.

As a young child, they would take him and his sisters, Lynne and Joanne, to Horse Guards Parade to watch Trooping The Colour. David also tells how he would look on as his grandfather would stand up for the Queen’s Christmas Day speech. ‘David’s mum and dad didn’t go before,’ said the friend. ‘He chose to take his grandparents on that occasion as he knew just how much it would mean to them.

‘They adored the Royal Family and were loyal monarchists who had so much respect for the late Queen.’

David will have a small celebration afterwards for close friends and family. His children Romeo, Cruz and Harper are expected to attend – though, sadly, it goes without saying that eldest son Brooklyn and his wife Nicola won’t be in attendance amid a family fall-out which shows no signs of ending.

The couple snubbed all of David’s 50th birthday celebrations in May this year and there has been no communication between them and Posh and Becks since.

When it was announced that his father was to be knighted back in the spring, Brooklyn didn’t congratulate him either publicly or privately, while his other two sons made a huge fuss of the news on social media.

Indeed, this time a decade ago, being handed a knighthood was unimaginable for the former England captain.

He was on the cusp of being made a ‘Sir’ back in 2014, but concerns were raised after he was caught up in an alleged tax avoidance scheme, which was later deemed to be legitimate.

And in February 2017 he took aim at the honours committee for taking him off the list for the gong, leaving his hopes of an honour in tatters.

In emails that were subsequently leaked, David, usually charming and mostly mild-mannered, called them ‘unappreciative c***s’ and insisted he didn’t ‘care about being knighted’.

But since then he has regularised his tax affairs and has received support for the award from Unicef, the charity that he has worked with for more than 20 years, and the British Fashion Council.

Both organisations canvassed opinions over whether they should put Beckham forward and received very positive feedback.

It is understood that some involved with the decision were very impressed with David’s birthday fundraiser, where he asked that instead of presents people should donate to the fund to help children – particularly girls – around the world.

One friend said: ‘He never took this for granted but he is just so honoured and thrilled.’

The timing couldn’t be more perfect for David, with friends saying it is fitting that it comes in the milestone year he turned 50.

It also comes amid his burgeoning closeness to the King.

They met at the British Fashion Council awards in May 2023 when David gifted him a pot of his homemade honey, ‘D Bee’z Sticky Stuff’, which he makes at the couple’s Grade II-listed barn in Great Tew, Oxfordshire.

The King was stunned to learn about David’s hobby and their conversation quickly turned to their mutual love of bees.

They also met at the Royal Horticultural Society Chelsea Flower Show in May this year.

The King invited him to Highgrove, where he asked him to join his foundation, and today the King is expected to confer on David the honour that he has craved for decades by dubbing him on first his right shoulder then his left with a ceremonial sword.

It will then be a case of ‘Arise Sir David!’
