Victoria Beckham reflected on her ‘horrifying’ Marc Jacobs campaign as she detailed the rocky transition from pop star to revered fashion designer.
Speaking in her new Netflix series, the 51-year-old former Spice Girl revealed she felt like a ‘laughing stock’ after being picked to model for the high fashion brand, only for them to ‘poke fun at her’ with the images.
The 2007 campaign saw Victoria emerging from a large carrier bag and posing up a storm in kooky accessories.
Acclaimed photographer Juergen Teller insisted that he had staged the photographs because Victoria had a reputation for looking ‘grumpy and serious with no sense of humour.’
Yet Victoria didn’t see the funny side, recalling: ‘When I first saw those pictures I was horrified. It was very much poking fun at me.
‘And that’s when I realised I was a laughing stock. No one took me seriously in this industry.’

She continued: ‘I knew I wanted to be designer, that I had a point of view but I also knew that I needed someone to believe in me.’
Thankfully Victoria managed to find a mentor in Roland Mouret and he advised her that she needed to ‘kill off’ the WAG image.
‘To start this new chapter of my life I had to change and strip the other personas away,’ Victoria mused. ‘I became a simpler, more elegant version of myself and I went to work.’
It proved successful and she went on to recreate her Marc Jacobs campaign in 2018 for her own label.
Yet the transition from ‘laughing stock’ to revered designer was far from smooth, with Victoria being pulled back into the pop world just as she was trying to make it in the fashion industry.
She explained: ‘When I was working with Roland the other Spice Girls told me they wanted to go on tour…
‘David was like, “it’s really good for the kids to see you do this”, he mum-guilted me!’
Victoria agreed to the 2008 reunion tour and confessed: ‘I hadn’t been Posh Spice for such a long time. It was good to be back with them.’

The Spice Girls reformed again in 2019, however this time Victoria refused to join them.
Since then, Mel B has been vocal about her desire to get back on tour and has publicly lambasted Victoria for not taking part.
Victoria confessed she was ‘hurt’ by one of Scary Spice’s comments, explaining: ‘It upset me not too long ago actually – Melanie B said to me “don’t forget where you’ve come from.”‘
She insisted: ‘I have never forgotten where I’ve come from. I have never forgotten that Posh Spice is the reason that I’m sitting here now.
‘She might have been grumpy but she was actually great.
‘It was good to celebrate the Spice Girls but it was during that [2008] tour that I realised I didn’t belong on stage. It had been fun but it wasn’t what I loved anymore.’
