Victoria Beckham on Son Brooklyn’s Feud: Children Made Her a ‘Control Freak’

Victoria Beckham has explained how she has been able to stay calm during ‘intense situations’ as she admitted that she learned through being the mum to four kids.

The fashion designer, 51, recently opened up her life to fans with her eponymous Netflix docuseries earlier this month, documenting the highs and lows of her career and personal life.

The three-part series followed the former Spice Girl in the run up to her Paris Fashion Week show in September 2024 – the biggest catwalk occasion she had ever thrown.

And after being praised her for the way she was able to compartmentalize in stressful situations and remain even within the chaos, Victoria opened up on how she was able to stay so outwardly calm.

Taking to Krista Smith on the Skip Intro podcast, she explained how she worked to ‘internalize’ her feelings, so as not to effect those around her, but admitted that ‘there’s a lot going on on the inside’.

She said: ‘I think I’ve always been quite a disciplined person. You know, that’s just who I am. That’s how I lead my life. But I do, I cope quite well in those intense situations.

‘And this is how I choose to lead my team. I have to internalize those things, because if not, it has like a domino effect, and that is not productive.

‘And I surround myself with great people. We all work very, very closely and very well together. And I’m just mindful of that. Is one of my, might you call it leadership skills, if you like.

‘I’m glass half full. I’m very, very positive. I believe in positive energy. But there’s a lot going on on the inside.’

Victoria went on to explain being the mum of four children with husband David – Brooklyn, 26, Romeo, 23, Cruz, 20, and Harper, 14 – had forced her to learn how to be disciplined, confessing she was ‘a control freak’.

She said: ‘Well, listen, let’s be honest, I’ve got four children as well. Okay, so I think that as a mum you learn to, you know?

‘The truth is I am a control freak. Well, I say I went into the documentary process a control freak and I’ve come out the other end a reformed control freak, because I haven’t had that control.

I mean, I’ve seen little bits of the documentary along the way, but I hadn’t seen the final edit until the premiere.’

Her comments come amid her and David’s ongoing rift with eldest child, Brooklyn and his heiress wife Nicola Peltz, 30, with the family not talking in months.

There have been suggestions that Nicola is at the centre of the dispute, with reports that she encouraged Brooklyn to distance himself from his parents.

The couple appear to have washed their hands of the entire Beckham clan after failing to attend any of his father David’s 50th birthday celebrations in May and growing closer with Nicola’s family.

Last week, Victoria spoke about the ‘changing dynamic’ in her family in a thinly-veiled remark about the ongoing feud with her Brooklyn and Nicola.

Appearing on the Call Her Daddy podcast with Alex Cooper she spoke about her ‘close family’, but did not reference Brooklyn directly.

Victoria shared how she tries to create a ‘safe forum’ where her children are able to come and talk to her about any issues they may have and ‘allows them make their own decisions’.

She said: ‘I mean, we’re such a close family and, you know, communication is key and we always let them know that anything that they want to talk about, you know, this is a safe forum. You know, that’s really important.’

Pressed on how she and David deal with the changing dynamics in their family, she insisted: ‘Again, it’s just about communicating.

‘We’ve always been that way with the kids. And I’m excited for them, they’re all very different. They all like to do different things.’

The family haven’t been pictured together since Boxing Day last year, with Brooklyn missing both David and Victoria’s birthdays and failing to support his mother’s documentary release.

Furthermore none of the Beckham clan were present at Brooklyn and Nicola’s vow renewals in August.

The young couple, who first wed in 2022, failed to invite any members of Brooklyn’s family, with reports David and Victoria heartbreakingly found out about their big day after reading about it on a US website.

It’s a stark contrast to Nicola’s family, who had key roles at the second wedding, with her father Nelson, 83, officiating, wearing her mother Claudia’s, 70, vintage wedding gown and letting her parents take centre stage once again at the after party.

In scenes filmed at Victoria’s September 2024 Paris Fashion Week show, the designer launched into an emotional monologue about her desire to make her family and colleagues proud.

The montage cut between images of Victoria’s collaborators, with Brooklyn and Nicola seen mingling with guests in the background.
