Victoria Beckham: David Guilt-Tripped Her Into Spice Girls Reunion

Victoria Beckham revealed that David ‘guilted’ her into joining the 2008 Spice Girls reunion.

Speaking in her self-titled Netflix documentary, she explained that she was trying to make a name for herself in the fashion industry and was moving away from her pop star past when she found herself  being pulled back into her old career.

She explained: ‘When I was working with Roland [Mouret] the other Spice Girls told me they wanted to go on tour…

‘David was like, “it’s really good for the kids to see you do this”, he mum-guilted me!’

For his part, David reasoned: ‘Our kids weren’t around to see their mum be a Spice Girl!

At the time, their daughter Harper was yet to be born, while Brooklyn was nine, Romeo, six, and Cruz, three.

Victoria agreed to the 2008 reunion tour and confessed: ‘I hadn’t been Posh Spice for such a long time. It was good to be back with them.’

Yet when the Spice Girls reformed again in 2019, this time Victoria refused to join them.

Victoria explained: ‘It was good to celebrate the Spice Girls but it was during that [2008] tour that I realised I didn’t belong on stage. It had been fun but it wasn’t what I loved anymore.’

Since then, Mel B has been vocal about her desire to get back on tour and has publicly lambasted Victoria for not taking part.

Victoria confessed she was ‘hurt’ by one of Scary Spice’s comments, explaining: ‘It upset me not too long ago actually – Melanie B said to me “don’t forget where you’ve come from.”‘

She insisted: ‘I have never forgotten where I’ve come from. I have never forgotten that Posh Spice is the reason that I’m sitting here now.

‘She might have been grumpy but she was actually great.’

The importance of family has remained a constant for Victoria, however.

At the close of the documentary Victoria broke down in tears as she reflected on her need to build on her success and make her family proud.

‘It makes me quite emotional because you’re always trying to prove yourself to people. What is stopping you from just saying “OK, I’ve achieved it?”‘ David asked her during a conversation in the garden of their Cotswolds home.

‘Because I’ve spent so many years fighting and building that I feel now I have an opportunity and I don’t want to let that slip,’ Victoria said before her voice broke.

‘Who are you trying to prove it to?’ David queried. ‘Maybe to you, You know of course I feel bad about all that time when I had to ask you to help me out,’ she said in tears.

‘When I saw yours and the kids’ faces backstage after the last [runway] show it was not the first time but a real moment for me when I could see how proud of me you were.’

‘It feels good, I’m not going to lie, I’m proud and I’m not ashamed to say I’m ambitious and I’ve still got a lot that I wanna do.’

Her family are featured at various points throughout the docuseries, including a blink and you’ll miss it shot of Brooklyn at her Paris Fashion Week show last year.

The have been locked in a family feud for months and haven’t been pictured together since Boxing Day last year.

The rest of Victoria’s family – husband David and kids Romeo, 23, Cruz, 20, and Harper, 14, all get more screen time and are shown proudly sitting on the front row ready for the show.
