Vicky Pattison: Overcoming Anxiety on Strictly Come Dancing Has Been My Biggest Challenge

She continues to impress on Strictly Come Dancing every week.

However, Vicky Pattison, 37, who is currently competing in this year’s glitzy ballroom series with professional dancer Kai Widdrington, 30, has revealed that overcoming her anxiety has been her biggest challenge yet.

Speaking to The Mirror, the former Geordie Shore star admitted: ‘I was really shocked at how all-consuming it was at first. I’d be visibly shaking and, yeah, there were a lot of tears.

‘Maybe watching me do this, though I’m really scared, will give people faith that they can do amazing things if they go outside their comfort zone.

‘And Kai does this lovely thing – he turns to me before we go out on the dance floor and says, “We’re just dancing. Just me and you – just dance with me”.’

Vicky said Kai’s words of reassurance are ‘so powerful and so lovely’ that the outside noise just ‘drifts away’.

As the hopes of lifting the Glitterball Trophy draw closer, Vicky, who married businessman Ercan Ramadan, 32, in August last year, also joked that it was a toss-up between having a baby or competing on Strictly.

She explained that at the beginning of the year, she told Ercan she was either going to do Strictly, host a second series of The Honesty Box, or they were going to have a baby.

When she got the call for Strictly, she said Ercan was ‘over the moon’, but added that having children is definitely on the cards for next year.

Since joining the show, Vicky said her husband has been her biggest supporter – waking her up with electrolytes and collagen each morning before ‘Strictly school’, texting her during rehearsals to ask what she wants for dinner, and being the ‘best dog dad’.

Despite the BBC show’s history with the so-called Strictly curse, Vicky joked that it’s the other way around for her, as Ercan and Kai have struck up their own ‘bromance’.

She added that Kai has gone down a storm with her family and friends and that she loves his gorgeous girlfriend, Chloe.

Over the past six weeks, Vicky’s ballroom skills have gone from strength to strength, and Kai gushed over how far she has come since their first rehearsal.

He told the publication that if he had shown her what she’s now achieving, she wouldn’t have believed it, with Vicky admitting she even struggled to clap in time during the first group dance.

Her highlights so far have included a stunning American Smooth, a Couple’s Choice routine to Cheryl’s hit Fight For This Love, and a sizzling Samba.

And it seems the highs have kept coming as Vicky’s idol, Cheryl, sent her a personal message of support, which she described as one of the ‘best moments’ of her life.

She also credited her best pal Pete Wicks, 37, who reached the semi-final last year with Jowita Przystal, 31, for being her ‘biggest cheerleader’.

She told the publication that the former TOWIE star has been to see them perform twice and calls her every show day to check in.

In October, Strictly hosts Tess Daly, 56, and Claudia Winkleman, 53, shocked fans by announcing that they would be leaving the hit BBC show after this series.

Vicky paid tribute to the presenting duo, saying they’ve done so much for women in television, adding that while Strictly will continue to bring joy to millions, their departure marks ‘the end of an era’.

Tess and Claudia, who have fronted the competition together since 2014, announced the news in an Instagram video, sitting side by side as they thanked the Strictly team.

Speaking to the camera, Claudia began: ‘There have been some rumblings and we want you to hear this from us.’

Tess chimed in: ‘We have news, after 21 wonderfully joyful years on Strictly, we have decided that the time is right to step aside and pass over the baton. The very sparkly baton!’

Claudia laughed, before turning to her co-star and pal to add: ‘You’ve been here since the beginning.’

Tess replied, pointing to Claudia: ‘With Bruce, lovely Bruce [Forsyth], and that was over two decades ago, but a lot of the time has been with you.

‘It’s been a huge part of our lives since our children were literally babes in arms, and now they’re adults, and I think genuinely we have cherished every second.’

Claudia continued: ‘We have, we’re so lucky to have been part of this amazing show, and we just want to thank the Strictly team, because Strictly is the people who make it.’

In the caption alongside the video, the duo penned to Strictly fans: ‘We have loved working as a duo and hosting Strictly has been an absolute dream.

‘We were always going to leave together and now feels like the right time.

‘We will have the greatest rest of this amazing series and we just want to say an enormous thank you to the BBC and to every single person who works on the show.

‘They’re the most brilliant team and we’ll miss them every day. We will cry when we say the last “keep dancing” but we will continue to say it to each other.

They concluded the post with: ‘Just possibly in tracksuit bottoms at home while holding some pizza.’

Strictly Come Dancing continues Saturday at 6:25pm and is followed by Sundays results show at 7:15pm on BBC One and iPlayer.
