Vicky Pattison: My Working-Class Roots Make Me Anxious

Appearing on Strictly Come Dancing must be a daunting experience, regardless of how used you are to the celebrity spotlight.

So it’s perhaps understandable that Vicky Pattison is feeling a few nerves and fears she’ll ‘mess up’.

The reality star, who won I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! in 2015 after finding fame on MTV reality show Geordie Shore, has told of her intense ‘anxiety’ at competing on this year’s Strictly.

Her doubts won’t have been eased after her Charleston was criticised by the Strictly judges and earned her just 25 points on Saturday’s edition of the show, leaving her looking upset.

She puts her worries down to her working-class roots – though there must be plenty of previous Strictly contestants from different backgrounds who’ve had just the same fears.

‘I’m feeling a lot of anxiety about Strictly,’ said Ms Pattison, 37.

‘I know I should just be excited to be considered for shows like this – I didn’t feel anything like this when I went in the [I’m A Celebrity] jungle.

‘Maybe it’s a bit of imposter syndrome, maybe it’s working-class feelings of being undeserving. Maybe it’s deep-rooted self-doubt.’

Ms Pattison, who now presents the Saturday afternoon slot on Heart FM, told Women’s Health magazine that she had gone back to therapy to deal with her feelings.

And she said of Strictly: ‘All the pros are carved like angels, and I’m there sweating away in my gym gear.

‘It’s both intimidating and overwhelming. Ms Pattison, who is married to TV presenter Ercan Ramadan, 32, added: ‘I’m scared that under this spotlight, I’ll mess up.’

The Vicky Pattison interview appears in the November issue of Women’s Health UK, out now.
