Tom Cruise is reportedly set to cast a younger version of himself for his next two  Mission: Impossible movies.

The Hollywood legend, 62, could be on the hunt to find the perfect fit to play younger Ethan Hunt in the epic action franchise. 

The huge opportunity rises as reports emerged that Tom wants to shed a light on the protagonist’s early days – in a bid to ‘explore Ethan’s past’.

‘The scenes will show Ethan in his early life and explore the things that happened to him before he went on to start working as a spy,’ an insider told The Sun.

‘It is something they’ve not done before with Mission: Impossible and so Tom thinks it could be a really interesting tangent for fans.’ 

‘They’re going to start looking for a young star to take on the role and they will appear a bit in the next film and then more in the ninth.

‘They are seeking a youngster who is completely fresh on the scene and will cause a real stir.’

Adding the opportunity is ‘undoubtedly huge’, the telly source added is vital for the actor to ‘get the right person’ for this role.

Earlier in November, the first trailer of Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning was finally released, as the long-awaited film confirmed its title after months of delays.  

Reprising his role as the titular hero, Tom  is set to take on his biggest mission yet, after a tense cliffhanger saw the spy determined to track down cyber weapon The Entity.

In the new trailer, fans get a glimpse back through some of the film franchise’s most iconic moments, as Ethan pleads with his team to ‘trust him one last time.’

A voice narrates: ‘Everything you were, everything you’ve done, has come to this.

‘When the need for certainty is absolute and the odds are deemed impossible, the mission falls to him, should he choose to accept.’

The preview offers glimpses of Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg and Vanessa Kirby, while Esai Morales returns as the villainous Gabriel.

The filming of the UK scenes of the eighth instalment of the Mission Impossible franchise initially took place between March and December 2022.

Production on the eighth film had originally halted so that the cast could promote Part One, and then the SAG-AFTRA strike began causing further delays.

Production restarted soon after, but was suspended in July due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strikes.

Filming resumed in March 2024, but came to another halt in May, allegedly due to a faulty gimbal (a camera tool). 

Mission Impossible 8 was originally meant to be filmed back-to-back with Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, which raked in over half a billion at box office.

If not for the strikes, MI:8 would have been with fans by the end of summer: its scheduled release date is now May 23, 2025.

It is hoped that the actor will not have to resort to desperately begging studio bosses to extend the film’s run this time around.

Filming for Mission Impossible 8 was hit by a string of delays, including the SAF-AFTRA strikes in 2023

It was previously reported that the Minority Report star was learning to fly a World War II plane for the eighth installment of the action franchise.

A source told The Sun : ‘Tom had started to learn to fly a Boeing Stearman biplane earlier this year for a major stunt scene in Mission: Impossible 8.

‘It’s obviously a highly skilled task but as usual he has no plans to cut any corners or bring in a stuntman.’

The insider went on: ‘Filming has only just wrapped on Mission: Impossible 7 but Tom has not given himself a break. And trying to film jaw-dropping scenes with an 80-year-old plane is particularly dangerous.’

Despite receiving positive reviews following its release in June 2023, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning was branded as the ‘least commercially successful Mission: Impossible film over the past decade’ by MovieWeb.com at the time.

But now, the flick has had a surprising resurgence on Netflix, landing on the streaming platform’s Global Top 10 list last week.

According to Screenrant, the movie was viewed 5.6 million times from June 10 to June 16, earning it the third spot on the chart, under Four Brothers and Hit Man.

The action film – which also starred Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, and Vanessa Kirby – follows agent Ethan Hunt on a new adventure throughout the Arabian desert.

He and his Impossible Mission Force team are tasked with tracking down a deadly weapon powered by AI.

While it grossed $567 million at the box office, Variety estimated five weeks after it premiered that it was set to lose around $100 million thanks to high production costs and marketing expenditures.

It had a reported budget of $291.6 million, making it one of the most expensive films ever made. 

In comparison, Barbie, which was out around the same time, made $1.4 billion at the box office, while Oppenheimer earned $953.8 million.

In addition, the previous Mission: Impossible film, entitled Fallout, took home $786 million in ticket sales when it came out in 2018. 

Even so, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning received raving reviews from fans and critics alike.

It has a high score of 96 per cent from critics and 94 per cent from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. 

‘It’s an unforgettable cinematic experience that will leave you breathless,’ wrote one reviewer on the site. ‘This is why we go to the movies.’

Tom, 61, is currently in the midst of filming the eighth instalment to the Mission: Impossible franchise, which will directly follow the events of Dead Reckoning.

Originally both Dead Reckoning and its follow-up were planned as the final movies in the Mission: Impossible series. 

However, while doing press for the movie, both Tom and writer-director Christopher McQuarrie indicated they have more movies in the works.
