Vanessa Feltz has opened up about being ‘a bit smashed up’ by life, as she admitted to being ‘absolutely, ridiculously naive’ in her younger years.
The TV personality, 62, revealed that the tragedy of losing her mum and failed romantic relationships put a dent in her happy-go-lucky attitude.
Speaking to the Stirring It Up podcast on Wednesday, Vanessa spoke candidly about how she used to be a ‘really jolly, merry, happy kind of person’.
‘And kind of bowling along for the next funny, good thing that was going to happen to me,’ she said. ‘When I think about it now, [I was] absolutely, ridiculously naive.
‘I’m a fairly straightforward and ‘having a nice time’ kind of a person – I thought and then I feel a bit smashed up by it all.’

Vanessa said she felt pressure to be both herself and her mother Valerie Ohrenstein, – who died in 1995 after battling endometrial cancer – for her two daughters.
She has also previously said that her marriage to surgeon Michael Kurer left her ‘battered and bruised’ when she discovered he had been unfaithful.
The pair wed in 1983 and later divorced in 2000. They share daughters Saskia, 35, and Allegra, 38.
Of feeling as though she had to take on the role of people who had left her life, Vanessa added: ‘I’m very enthusiastic, but it’s quite knackering to be all those people.’
She has only spent one night at home alone since her split from her cheating ex- fiancé Ben Ofoedu.
However, the Celebs Go Dating star has said her quest for love has been without success and said in June that her last date went ‘horrendously.’
Vanessa – who split from singer Ben, 51, in February last year after 16 years together – admitted that she didn’t enjoy the date and decided ‘couldn’t stand him’ before the soup had even been served.
She confessed to Heat: ‘I had one dinner with some fellow last night, and I absolutely couldn’t stand him before the soup, I didn’t like him.’

However, despite the bad date, the star still refuses to spend a night at home as she admitted that she has been ‘out every night for a year’.
The TV personality – who previously joked that she went on ‘thousands of dates’ while on Celebs Go Dating – revealed she doesn’t enjoy staying at home.
She confessed: ‘I’ve been out every night for more than a year. I stayed home one night a few months ago and I still didn’t really like it.’
Vanessa also revealed to the publication that she tends to ‘settle down incredibly quickly’ however, has now realised that’s not the best option for her.
She admitted: ‘I’ve always settled down incredibly quickly, and I’m not sure that’s always been the best thing, really.’
It comes after Vanessa joined E4’s Celebs Go Dating last year in a bid to find the right man for her and appeared on This Morning to honestly discuss her experience.
Speaking to Josie Gibson, 39, and Andi Peters, 53, in August last year, the former Radio2 DJ said that ‘dating was damn difficult’ and had the pair in hysterics over her accounts of her dates on the show, including turning her nose up at the ‘hot’ singles Josie pointed out in the clip of the show.

Vanessa joked that she went on ‘thousands of dates’ on the show which matches singles with other singles and confessed what it was like having the dates filmed.
She told the presenters: ‘I think if you like someone and fancy them and find them attractive and find them funny and like the way they smell and like the way they look and whatever else, you completely forget there are any cameras. You really do.
‘If you don’t really like them and it’s not really going well, you’re glad there are TV cameras.’
‘There was one memorable moment where I just yelled at the top of my voice, “Producer, have we got enough in the can yet or what?” And the poor old date looked a bit horrified and I said, “Well, it’s going to be on television, isn’t it? Have we got enough or haven’t we got enough? I’m going to go home. So how long do I have to stay?”‘
‘I thought I was very polite throughout, but various rumblings on the production team told me maybe I was a little tough in parts.’
