Tyler Perry revealed that an $800 million expansion at Tyler Perry Studios had been put on hold ‘indefinitely’ after seeing the work of OpenAI’s text-to-video model Sora in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
The 54-year-old media mogul was in the middle of planning several upgrades at his studio complex in Atlanta, which would have seen the addition of 12 soundstages, when he was given a demonstration of Sora’s abilities.
The actor – who recently offered Cocoa Brown $400,000 – told the media outlet that the AI program, which can generate realistic graphics and videos based on text, was ‘mind-blowing.’
Perry went on to voice his concerns regarding Sora’s implications for the future of the entertainment industry, and he predicted: ‘A lot of jobs are going to be lost.’
The star of the Madea franchise went on to state that, after the demonstration, he became worried about the occupations of the individuals working in the business.

‘I immediately started thinking of everyone in the industry who would be affected by this, including actors and grip and electric and transportation and sound and editors,’ he said.
The Gone Girl actor then stated that Sora would likely ‘touch every corner of our industry’ in the coming years.
Perry went on to remark that he was also worried about how usage of the AI program would be regulated by major studios.
‘I feel like everybody in the industry is running a hundred miles an hour to try and catch up…But me, just like every other studio in town, we’re all trying to figure it all out,’ he said.
The performer was then asked about how the entertainment world should take on the advent of AI, and he called for ‘an all hands on [deck], whole industry approach.’
Perry added: ”It can’t be one union fighting every contract every two or three years.’
He also stated that he was ‘not feeling any pressure to use’ Sora, although he was ‘definitely looking at the advantages and what it brings to the table.’
The actor concluded by stating that both Hollywood executives and Congress should look further into how to balance the well-being of individuals working in the entertainment industry and the growth of AI.

The performer officially moved his production company into the 330-acre property four years later.
Numerous films and television productions, including Black Panther and Hawkeye, have been shot in the studio space.
Tyler Perry Studios’ facilities are also expected to be used for the upcoming Marvel superhero feature Blade, which is scheduled to premiere in 2025.
