Inspired by the characters in John le Carré’s best-selling novel, the first series won multiple BAFTAs, Emmy Awards, and Golden Globes and was watched by more than ten million viewers, making it one of 2016’s most watched TV shows.
Tom himself won a Golden Globe for his role as ex-soldier Jonathan Pine and, speaking after the shock announcement, said: ‘The first series of The Night Manager was one of the most creatively fulfilling projects I have ever worked on.
‘The depth, range and complexity of Jonathan Pine was, and remains, a thrilling prospect.
‘I’m so looking forward to reuniting with Simon and Stephen Cornwell, David Farr and Stephen Garrett, and to working with Georgi Banks-Davies to tell the next chapter of our story. I can’t wait.’
Along with Tom, the series also starred Hugh Laurie, Olivia Colman, Tom Hollander, David Harewood and Elizabeth Debicki.
Tom did nothing to calm the rumours around the upcoming series when he appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live earlier this yeatr.
Questioned by the US talk show host about Hugh Laurie’s potential return to the show, the actor said: ‘I don’t know. He is a huge influence – he knows the character better than anyone.’
Kimmel replied: ‘This seems for sure like a lie because you just said you figured out the story. How could there be the story figured out without knowing if Hugh Laurie is in the story?’
