Will it be: ‘Arise, Sir Tom Cruise?’
Sources close to the matter say that ‘Cruise’s team have been sounded out’ about the possibility of a knighthood – and believe that he may get the award as soon as next month in King Charles’s Birthday Honours.
Cruise, 62, wouldn’t be the first American to be granted an honorary knight or damehood.
Steven Spielberg, Angelina Jolie and Bill Gates were all given the award by the late Queen Elizabeth II as a direct gift of the sovereign. It is the only title that non-British citizens are eligible for.
If Cruise were to be ennobled in the next honours list, expected to be published on June 8, it might even mean a joint trip to the Palace with his friend David Beckham, 50, who has hopes in that direction, too.
In the case of Cruise, the actor has done a huge amount for British film over the years – honours are awarded to US citizens who have contributed to British science, fashion, military service and arts – and has warm links with the Royal Family, having escorted Prince William and Kate Middleton to the Top Gun: Maverick premiere in London in 2022.

That same year, he also was also mobbed by fans during an unscheduled walkabout in Windsor before appearing in a concert to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
It was a surprise to many when he made the special visit, fist bumping and waving to the crowds as he walked to the Royal Windsor Horse Show event ground.
He then hosted the Platinum Jubilee Celebration – A Gallop Through History, which saw more than 500 horses and 1,000 participants pay tribute to the Queen.
During a TV interview at the time, Cruise said he didn’t hesitate for a second when asked to take part in the event.
‘It is a wonderful event and I feel very privileged to be here. I was very honoured,’ he said.
‘I love the history of England, and I just have great respect for the Queen… She is just a woman I greatly admire. She is someone who has tremendous dignity. I admire her devotion and what she has accomplished is historic.
‘Presidents, world leaders, people of all walks of life, not just in America but the world, knows dignity and devotion and kindness – something I’ve always felt about her.’
He also revealed a previous brush with royalty during the interview, recalling how he met the late Prince Philip at a Buckingham Palace charity dinner in 2017.
Cruise said: ‘He was telling me a wonderful story about how he got the first helicopter into Buckingham Palace during [the Queen’s] coronation. I was this close to going, “I’d like to land a helicopter, if you ever need a helicopter, someone to pick you up, I think I could put it right there”.’

The actor is being garlanded with a British Film Institute (BFI) Fellowship on Monday for his services to UK film just as British-American Christopher Nolan was – a month before it was announced that Nolan, 54, was to get a knighthood.
Cruise has chosen to shoot numerous films, including many Mission: Impossible movies, in England – on location in London, Birmingham, North Yorkshire and the Lake and Peak Districts – showcasing and investing in British craft expertise and bringing jobs, skills and training.
He describes himself as an ‘Anglophile’ and has been based in the UK for much of the past two decades; he has an apartment in Knightsbridge, central London, and a larger countryside home tucked away in Kent.
He’s often seen helicoptering from Battersea, south west London, and has been recently accompanied by actress Ana de Armas, 37, who he is understood to be dating.
A Scientologist for many years, his 32-year-old daughter Bella lives in Croydon and works at the Scientology Centre in East Grinstead. It’s not thought that there are any concerns over his religion which would impact his chances of a knighthood.
The BFI Fellowship will also acknowledge Cruise’s support for the cinematic experience – he always urges audiences to see all films on the big screen and recently said how much he had enjoyed watching Ryan Coogler’s film Sinners in the cinema.
Cruise – who is in South Korea promoting his last Mission: Impossible film, due for release in the US on May 23 – said in a statement released by the BFI that he was ‘truly honoured’ by the award.
In perhaps a final bid in his decades-long honorary knighthood campaign, he added: ‘I have been making films in the UK for over 40 years and have no plans to stop. The UK is home to incredibly talented professionals – actors, directors, writers and crews – as well as some of the most stunning locations in the world. I’m grateful for all the BFI has done to support UK filmmaking and this incredible art form we share.’
