TikTok’s beloved Grandma Mary dies at 98 on New Year’s Eve

Grandma Mary, the 98-year-old matriarch who became a fan favorite on TikTok, died on New Year’s Eve.

The news was shared by her granddaughter, who goes by Pyxie online, in a post to her 1.4 million followers. 

According to Pyxie, Grandma Mary passed away peacefully in her sleep as the year came to a close.

‘On New Year’s Eve, we said goodbye to Grandma. She peacefully passed away in her sleep,’ Pyxie wrote alongside a touching photo of the two together. 

She added, ‘How lucky we are to have experienced her and her love. She will always be with us.’

Grandma Mary rose to internet fame through frequent appearances on Pyxie’s TikTok account, where she was often seen going about her daily routines.

She returned in December to reassure followers, writing at the time, ‘For anyone wondering, grandma is alive and quieter these days. 

‘What a beautiful thing it is to witness who she is, and who she helped me become.’ 

Born in Massachusetts in 1927, Grandma Mary was the daughter of Armenian parents who fled the genocide and entered the United States via Greece. 

Her early life was shaped by her family’s immigrant experience and the challenges of rebuilding in a new country.

She later returned to Armenia as a young adult, where she married and began raising a family. 

After the birth of their son and daughter, she and her husband decided to relocate back to the United States in 1966.
