The Traitors contestants Netty and Ross have surprise onscreen reunion as BBC bosses say ‘it was not planned’

Two of The Traitors contestants had an unexpected reunion when they arrived at the famous Scottish castle during the launch episode.

While Netty was over the moon to see a familiar face among the 20 other strangers, Ross was sceptical and already in game mode, despite the Traitors not even being chosen yet.

BBC Bosses say it was not planned to have a second pair of contestants on the show who already know each other, as it was revealed in the first episode that there is also a mother and daughter duo in the game.

When conducting background checks, producers did find that Netty and Ross followed each other on social media, but the link was tenuous and they didn’t want to not cast them because of it.

Mike Cotton, Creative Director at Studio Lamberts, told the Daily Mail that neither player was warned ahead of the opening scene, as they wanted to watch their natural reaction on-screen for the first time and see how it played out in the game.

Netty’s stunned look quickly turned to excitement as she jumped into Ross’ arms after exiting the black 4x4s, while Ross was more reserved, making the reunion slightly awkward.

She then points to Ross and screams to the group, ‘I know him!’

Speaking to the camera, Netty added: ‘I get out of the car, and I recognise a face of someone called Ross who I met 10/15 years ago. I had no idea Ross was going to be here.’

He later explained that he was worried people would be suspicious of them.

‘Seeing Netty for the first time, I was like oh can we keep…,’ he said, while pretending to zip his mouth shut.

‘But she is a very honest person, and I didn’t want to betray her, and it was really nice to see her. In the back of my mind, I was thinking this looks a bit suss.’

The pair later explained that they know each other through mutual friends in London, but Netty has since moved to Glasgow, and they haven’t seen each other for over 10 years.

Netty is a single mother with a limb difference, who wants to challenge herself and win the money to take her seven-year-old daughter travelling.

The 42-year-old signed up to, ‘get a bit of herself back’, adding: ‘One things are more challenging for me than others, but I like to think that I can work my way around it.’

Ross, 37, is a personal trainer from London, who confidently stated he has won numerous accolades and is generally a lucky guy.

‘I’ve won at most things. When I was younger, I played basketball for London and at the London Youth Games, moving on to play rugby sevens through Sport England Tall and Talented scheme under 25s. I did bodybuilding. I’m a fifth ranked muscle model in Europe,’ he said.

And they are not the only pair who know each other on the show, as it was revealed very early on that Judy is Roxy’s mother.

The reveal wasn’t as epic as the iconic moment when Diane revealed that Ross is her son during series two. The duo entered the contest separately and did not reveal their connection to their co-stars, but viewers were clued in on the huge secret in the third episode.

But with Judy’s name being brought up as a potential Traitor on the first night, Roxy was feeling protective.

Bosses shared with the Daily Mail that they never plan when they will reveal a secret relationship to viewers; they do so when it naturally feels right.

Roxy warned her mother, who is thought to be a faithful but could be the secret Traitor, that she could be at risk of being banished.

Then, speaking to the camera, she said: ‘James is running wild, saying Judy is a Traitor. I don’t know if she is a Traitor or not.

‘Judy seems lovely, but I’m bound to say that… considering she is my mum. I feel super protective of her, and hearing anyone cast doubt on her for her actions is just generally not nice.’

Judy, 60, adopted Roxy, 32, when she was four years old and said it is the best thing she has ever done.

Opening up ahead of her appearance, Roxy shared that the first six years of her life were rocky, but hopes her live experience can get her far in the competition

She said: ‘The first six years of my life were a little rocky, and I think having that lived experience of adapting to different situations, meeting different people, figuring out who to trust, I thought those skills that have come from unfortunate circumstances, would actually take me really far on the show.’

The Traitors continues on January 2 at 8pm on BBC One and iPlayer.
