Martha Stewart has revealed how an encounter with Justin Bieber helped rescue her flailing career.
The businesswoman, 83, soared to fame as a homemaking and lifestyle expert but had to give up control of her media empire after she was imprisoned in 2004.
While she landed a self-titled daytime show, its popularity soon waned and her social and cultural relevance declined.
Yet speaking in her Netflix documentary Martha, the TV personality reflected on how agreeing to appear on the Comedy Central Roast Of Justin Bieber in 2015 brought her star power back on the rise.
Admitting she hadn’t watched a roast before agreeing to do it, Martha mused: ‘My publicist said “this is a little bit out of your milieu!”‘

Yet she was determined to give it a go, and found herself sitting alongside host Kevin Hart, Shaquille O’Neal, Ludacris, Snoop Dogg, Natasha Leggero, Hannibal Buress, Chris D’Elia, Jeff Ross, Pete Davidson and Will Ferrell as his Anchorman character Ron Burgundy.
During the roast, Martha had the audience in hysterics as she cracked jokes such as: ‘Justin, I’m sure it’s great to have 60 million followers on Twitter, but the only place people will be following you in jail is into the shower.’
Martha’s jail time had been a regular butt of jokes throughout the night – and one she was happy to poke fun at herself, saying she was there to ‘give Justin Bieber some tips for when he inevitably ends up in prison’, including making a shank and how she ‘stuck’ the ‘biggest bull-dyke’ in jail to get herself respect.
After pause for laughter, she quipped: ‘And Shaq, I hope your mum still doesn’t hold a grudge.’
Martha then told Justin that he needs to ‘settle down’ and ‘find yourself the right gal’.
‘But she’ll have to be someone on your level, someone powerful and famous and rich, someone you can smoke a joint with or indulge in the occasional three-way,’ she said.
‘I’m talking about a player in the boardroom and a freak in the bedroom. So Justin, my final piece of advice is: “Call me.”‘
Martha received a standing ovation for her roast and Justin himself called her ‘incredible’ as he went in for a hug when she had finished.

While the documentary made numerous headlines thanks to Martha’s candor about her 29-year marriage to her ex-husband Andy and their extra-marital affairs, the mogul isn’t pleased with the project.
In a new no-holds barred interview, Martha detailed the numerous elements she was unhappy with – including unflattering camera angles and various anecdotes left on the cutting room floor.
‘Those last scenes with me looking like a lonely old lady walking hunched over in the garden? Boy, I told him to get rid of those. And he refused,’ she raged.
‘I hate those last scenes. Hate them.’

Speaking to The New York Times, Martha explained that she had ruptured her Achilles’ tendon and had recently had an operation, hence the limping.
‘But again, he [R.J.] doesn’t even mention why — that I can live through that and still work seven days a week,’ she quipped.
Martha was particularly irritated about R.J. using the ‘ugliest’ camera angle, despite her insisting that he should change it.
‘He had three cameras on me,’ she said. ‘And he chooses to use the ugliest angle. And I told him, ‘Don’t use that angle! That’s not the nicest angle. You had three cameras. Use the other angle.’ He would not change that.’
But the entire documentary wasn’t a total flop in Martha’s eyes, admitting she ‘loved the first half’.
