A shock theory as to the real reason Coldplay only performed in Perth when they visited Australia last year has been revealed.
The band are currently in Australia on their Spheres World Tour, which sees the band perform across four nights at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium and Sydney’s Olympic Park.
But it’s been a long time between Aussie east coast gigs for the Yellow hitmakers who last hit Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney for their 2016 A Head Full Of Dreams Tour.
On the Shameless podcast, the hosts were discussing the band, when the topic of their last visit Down Under was mentioned.
Coldplay returned Down Under last year but confined themselves to two shows on the west coast at Perth’s Optus Stadium.
The podcast hosts were recapping comments frontman Chris Martin made while at one of their concerts in Melbourne.
‘He addressed why, when they came to Perth last year, they didn’t do Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane at the same time,’ one of the hosts said, before mentioning how Martin, 47, said he was nervous because of bad reviews.
Chris went on to claim the reason he had avoided Australia’s east coast was due to a negative review of the band’s December 2016 performance at Brisbane’s Suncorp stadium.

The band returned Down Under last year but confined themselves to two shows on the west coast at Perth’s Optus Stadium. Chris Martin has previously said he didn’t tour the eastern seaboard because of a bad review from his Brisbane show
‘I made the mistake eight years ago, I looked at the press and a gentleman wrote an article saying that he lived next to the stadium, and he said we ruined his night,’ he said.
But the podcast hosts made the keen observation that the band’s Perth shows were sponsored by the Western Australian government.
‘They were subsidised for two exclusive concerts to the tune of $8million,’ said one of the hosts.

In July this year, the Guardian reported that the Western Australian government had paid millions of dollars to Live Nation Entertainment, which included $8million to subsidise two exclusive live concerts by Coldplay.
Another one of the podcasters then queried if that was the ‘only reason’ the band limited their tour to the west coast, referencing the previous bad reviews as another reason.
‘I believe that, but I also think he could’ve just told the truth, which is that he got a bit of money for it too.’
The band’s first show of their Australian stadium tour was derailed last Wednesday night after one band member suffered a health emergency.
In a career first, lead singer Chris Martin announced the band would be playing their first show in Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium without bassist Guy Berryman after he was struck down by an illness.
During the concert, Chris said: ‘We will have a slightly different show and we’ll do our best to make it amazing because we are in Melbourne with all you beautiful people.’
‘If you see some mistakes and problems, it’s because we don’t have our bass player. You won’t see Guy tonight because he is vomiting,’ the singer added.
Taking to Instagram after the show on Wednesday night, the band thanked their fans for understanding.
‘Tonight was the first time in our band’s history that we’ve played a show without all four members onstage. Guy was taken ill unexpectedly just before the show. Thank you for carrying us through it.’
