When it comes to facing the trials and tribulations of love, even the rich aren’t famous aren’t immune. 

Juggling successful careers and a life in the limelight can lead to tension between couples and this year there seems to have been a high number of celebrities unable to deal with the strain. 

Hollywood couples Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom and Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban shocked the world when they announced their splits. 

While Lily Allen made her return to the music industry with a painfully honest break up album amid her divorce from David Harbour after his multiple infidelities. 

Tom Cruise and Ana de Armas also called time on their almost 30 year age gap romance and Sydney Sweeney called off her wedding to Jonathan Davino.  

Meanwhile, in the UK, This Morning star Cat Deeley split from her husband of 12 years Patrick Kielty and Love Island King and Queen Millie Court and Liam Reardon parted ways.

And let’s not forget JoJo Siwa – who split from her partner Kath Ebbs to strike up an incredibly unlikely romance with Chris Hughes following their Celebrity Big Brother stint.  

As the year comes to a close, we take a look back at the most surprising and shocking celebrity splits.  

Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban 

Nicole and Keith dominated headlines in September after news of their break-up emerged, along with a wave of speculation about what went wrong between them. 

The actress, 58, has since filed for divorce to end their 19-year marriage, citing irreconcilable differences and insiders in Nicole’s camp believe Keith has already moved on with a ‘younger woman in the music industry’. 

The Oscar winner and the musician have been kept apart of late due to their hectic filming and touring schedules.

An insider previously told the Daily Mail that Nicole was left ‘blindsided’ by the split – though it now appears she was the one to hammer the final nail into the coffin.

They said: ‘Keith never sees Nicole, either she is filming or he is on tour. There was a lot of love between the two and they might not divorce, but there is a world that they both live where neither of them are in it. 

‘Keith and Nicole have been together for decades and there is a world which they can reconcile, but the way their pairing is now, it is not a couple.’

The country star has been away for much of the year on his High and Alive World Tour while Nicole and Sunday and her sister Faith, 14, have remained in Nashville, where the couple own a $4million compound.

TMZ reported that ‘Keith has acquired his own residence in Nashville and has moved out of their family home’.

Over the summer, the actress and their kids stayed in England while she filmed the sequel to her 1998 movie Practical Magic. She was paying a reported £65,000 ($87,000) each month to rent a luxurious Hampstead mansion once owned by pop star Boy George.

In November Nicole gave an update on how she was doing as she chatted to Ariana Grande for Interview magazine, but the conversation started with the 32-year-old pop star asking the vet, ‘How are you?’

Nicole seemed to hint at her emotional state after her split as she replied: ‘I’m hanging in there.’

The Oscar-winning actress had reportedly been dreading the public’s response for months prior to the couple’s split announcement.

‘She’s been stressed because she knew the separation would eventually become public and she was dreading it,’ a source told People in early October.

‘But she’s surprisingly level-headed and calm. Now that it’s out she’s just focused on what’s ahead and her girls,’ the insider said of the couple’s daughters Sunday, 17, and Faith, 14.

Meanwhile sources say Keith is struggling as they said: ‘He’s exhausted, isolated and looking at a future he never imagined..

‘He’s also lost his best friend, Nicole, who was his greatest supporter in life. He’s wondering if he’s made a huge mistake.’

Sources say Keith has been quietly taking on private performances, including a recent show for associates of Donald Trump, as he shoulders steep divorce-related expenses, including tuition for daughters Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret.

‘He’s got to pay the bills – and divorce lawyers don’t come cheap,’ the insider noted.

Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom 

The Hollywood couple never officially tied the knot despite getting engaged six years ago. 

And representatives for the pair confirmed to DailyMail.com that the pair had split in July. 

They revealed: ‘Orlando and Katy have been shifting their relationship over the past many months to focus on co-parenting. 

‘They will continue to be seen together as a family, as their shared priority is – and always will be – raising their daughter with love, stability, and mutual respect.’ 

The pair began dating in 2016 after meeting and bonding over a shared love of In-N-Out burger at a Golden Globes party.

They later got engaged three years later on Valentine’s Day 2019, before welcoming their four-year-old daughter Daisy Dove into the world.

But Covid forced them to postpone their nuptials, and as time passed and the singer got swept up in juggling her career and being a new mum – they welcomed daughter Daisy in August 2020 – the wedding fell to the back burner.

They started to hit a ‘rough patch,’ and with her massive Lifetimes world tour continuing through December, getting married was ‘not on their radar,’ an insider alleged.

Following the news of their split, a source told Us Weekly: ‘Katy and Orlando have split but are amicable,’ while also adding that the separation has been ‘not contentious’ thus far.

‘Katy is of course upset but is relieved to not have to go through another divorce, as that was the worst time in her life.’

The insider further added that the reported breakup had been ‘a long time coming’ and that their relationship had also been ‘tense for months.’

In the wake of the separation, Orlando whisked himself away to Venice to attend the star-studded nuptials between Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez.

Meanwhile Katy, who had been a guest at Lauren’s bachelorette party in Paris and was also one of the bride’s fellow passengers on the controversial all-female Blue Origin space flight launched by Jeff, was not in attendance.

Since their split Katy has started dating former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in a shock turn of events. 

After first sparking dating rumours in July the pair finally went Instagram official this month after fevered public attention on their relationship.

Lily Allen and David Harbour 

This year marked Lily Allen’s return to the music industry when she released the ultimate revenge album West End Girl, charting her split from her husband David Harbour. 

The singer confirmed the pair’s split in January after it emerged that David had a three-year affair with a costume designer.

Lily and David tied the knot in Vegas in 2020, and the couple moved from London to the United States.

However, last December, friends confirmed they had split after living ‘separate lives’ for months.

Their separation came after Lily turned amateur sleuth after speculating that David had ‘cheated’ on the same dating app.

Lily was left in ‘agony’ when she allegedly discovered the actor had a secret profile on the celebrity dating app, The Mail on Sunday revealed.

The pop star joined the app herself, pretending to be ‘looking for women’ – and allegedly found that David had already set up a dating profile. He was reportedly listed on the app as being active for at least a month.

In her latest album Lily addressed David’s infidelities in the semi-autobiographical album on tracks Tennis and Madeline, as she sang ‘Who the f**k is Madeleine?’ 

Speaking to Esquire Spain in September before the album’s release, David reflected on his ‘pain, slip ups and mistakes’ as he reached 50.

Asked by the publication if there was anything he’d change about the last half a century David said: ‘That’s such a hard question – the question of regret, or something. I would change either everything or nothing.

‘You either accept your path completely and realise that even the pain and the slip-ups and the mistakes are all part of the journey, and that there’s truth and growth, wisdom and deeper empathy and connection in all that.

‘It’s kind of like a house of cards, the minute you try to change one thing you kind of have to change it all.’  

Ana de Arma and Tom Cruise 

Tom, 63, and Ana, 37, were last seen publicly together in July looking besotted with each other as they went official with their romance.

However it wasn’t to last and the pair went their separate ways in October after realizing the ‘spark had gone’ per The US Sun.

A source close to the pair said: ‘Tom and Ana had a good time together but their time as a couple has run its course.

‘They are going to remain good friends but they aren’t dating anymore. They just realized they weren’t going to go the distance and that they are better off as mates.

‘The spark had gone between them but they still love each other’s company and they’ve both been really adult about it. She’s already been cast in his next film, so they will continue to work together.’

Meanwhile, another source claimed it was Ana who ultimately decided to call time on their nine-month romance.

They told US Weekly: ‘Things were moving fast and she started to get a little uncomfortable with how fast it was going.’

Continuing, the insider said she ‘put the brakes on’ but ‘still likes [Tom] a lot’ and they have ‘undeniable chemistry’.

Though they are ‘done for now’ the two ‘will see how things go in the future’.

The pair’s romance is believed to have started after they ‘spent every day together’ while ‘training for the intense underwater sequences’ for their thriller Deeper, which has now been put on hold.

In the summer, the two were snapped hand-in-hand as they whisked themselves off on a romantic weekend to Woodstock, Vermont.

They also attended David Beckham’s 50th birthday at Notting Hill’s Core back in May.

Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin 

The actress, 36, and the Coldplay frontman, 48, dated for eight years and were even engaged before their split was confirmed in June.

She and Martin were first romantically linked in 2017 following his 2015 divorce from Oscar-winner Gwyneth Paltrow, 53, with whom he shares two children.

Yet this year they parted ways after a decade together with sources claiming that while Dakota was ready to walk down the aisle, Chris wasn’t. 

A source told DailyMail.com, ‘Their relationship has been over for a long time, they just haven’t been able to figure out how to make it official.’

‘She was sick of him dragging his feet on setting a date for the wedding,’ another source claimed to Page Six.

The Daily Mail’s source claimed Johnson was ‘devastated’ that she would no long be around Martin’s daughter Apple, 21, and son Moses, 19, ‘as much anymore, but wants them to know that she is always there for them’.

The source concluded by hinting at a chance of reconciliation between the pair but insisted that ‘being separated will do wonders if [Martin and Johnson] were to have any type of future together’.

Sophie Turner and Peregrine Pearson

Sophie and Peregrine were first linked in October 2023 following the actress’ split from her husband Joe Jonas. 

It at the end of last year that it was reported that Sophie could see herself having children with Peregrine, who is the eldest son and heir of Michael Pearson, the 4th Viscount Cowdray.

In November, it was claimed she would ‘love to have children’ with Perry in the future, according to sources who revealed the actress believed he could be ‘the one’.

The pair reportedly split in April this year, however they then appeared to reconcile as they were seen together at Glastonbury Festival in June of this year.

Onlookers said the couple looked ‘smitten’ with one another. One said: ‘Sophie was on the phone looking for Peregrine and then they saw one another and dashed over.

‘They looked so happy.’

However last month it was revealed that the couple had called time on their relationship once again with Sophie reportedly joining celebrity dating app Raya. 

Now Sophie is reportedly dating Chris Martin, following his split from Dakota, after the pair went on a ‘secret date’.

According to sources the pair have ‘a lot of chemistry’ and a ‘definite spark’.

A source told US Weekly: ‘They have gone out on a few dates in London. It is still very new, but they have a lot of chemistry, and there’s a definite spark between them.

‘Sophie has always admired Chris and was a big fan of both him and his music long before they ever met.’

Meanwhile her ex Peregrine has officially moved on from his two-year relationship with the Game Of Thrones star and was seen packing on the PDA with stunning German influencer Nina Suess last month. 

Peregrine and Nina could not keep their hands off each other as they passionately kissed during a romantic date in west London.

Sydney Sweeney and Jonathan Davino 

It was initially reported in February that Sydney and Jonathan’s May wedding ceremony had been postponed. 

However it has since been revealed the pair parted ways in January after they began dating in 2018 and got engaged in 2022. 

There were hints of trouble in the romance earlier this year when the actress started staying at the Beverly Hills Hotel and removed a photo of her and her now-ex from Instagram. 

The Euphoria star, who was seen without her engagement ring in February then came clean about the breakup in May when asked if she was planning a wedding.

‘No,’ was the answer. She answered ‘yes,’ when asked if she was single, adding, ‘I’m learning a lot about myself, spending more time with my friends. And I’m loving it.’

Amid reports that the longtime couple has ended their relationship just weeks before they planned to walk down the aisle, TMZ has reported that the actress, 27, and entrepreneur, 41, have been ‘separated since January.’

Another source shared with People in April: ‘She’s exactly where she wants to be. Most people would feel overwhelmed by her working schedule this year, but not Syd. She’s all about working right now and very excited about all her projects.’

It was added, ‘She’s not ready to settle down. They only lasted for this long because it was hard for her to break it off. They didn’t split because there is no love. They split because she just wants to focus on her career right now.’

Since their split Sydney has begun dating record executive Scooter Braun, 44, after they sparked up romance rumours back in June.

The actress crossed paths with him when they both attended the Venice nuptials of Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez.

Sources told Page Six in September that Scooter had been ‘obsessed’ with the star after their meeting and began ‘pursuing’ her following the wedding.

That same month, it was reported that the two stars are ‘casually dating’ with an insider telling TMZ, ‘Sydney has just ended a relationship and she’s doing what women in their 20s do – she’s dating.’

A separate source told Entertainment Tonight that both Sydney and Scooter are keeping their relationship ‘low-key.’

Kaia Gerber and Austin Butler  

Kaia and Austin became the first Hollywood couple to split this year after they reportedly decided to end things towards the end of 2024 after three years together. 

The couple went public with their romance in March 2022 when they walked the red carpet at W Magazine‘s pre-Oscars party.

So followed a string of public displays of affection, first at the Met Gala in the May, followed by a passionate kiss in front of photographers at the Cannes Film Festival.

Yet despite their public appearances the couple have kept their relationship relatively private with neither party speaking openly about the other.

It seems Kaia was warned off the Elvis star by her parents Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber after they expressed their fears she could be wasting the ‘best years of her life’ with Austin if he isn’t ready to commit long term.

With no signs of an engagement, the pair were troubled by the relationship’s lack of progress after three years and sat down with Austin in October for a serious talk about his intentions with their daughter, questioning why he still hasn’t proposed.

‘Randey and Cindy both love Austin and think of him as family, but the fact is he isn’t,’ a source close to the couple told DailyMail.com. ‘After dating their daughter Kaia for over three years he’s shown no sign of asking her to get engaged.

‘They don’t think for a minute he isn’t serious about her, but he’s 33 and isn’t it time he thought about settling down?’

JoJo Siwa and Kat Ebbs   

JoJo and Kath ended their six month relationship under rather unprecedented circumstances after the singer’s stint in Celebrity Big Brother. 

The Dance Moms star, 22, formed a close bod with Chris Hughes, 32, during the show, where viewers became convinced there was more to their friendship than they admitted. 

After leaving the house in April, JoJo immediately broke up with Kath at the CBB wrap party, but went onto insist Chris was not to blame, and their relationship was strictly platonic.

That is, until June, when Chris posted an intimate snap of him and JoJo in bed together, and they confirmed that they are indeed in a relationship.

When the series wrapped, Kath says they were blindsided when JoJo ended their relationship at the after-party, prompting them to post a raw 13-minute TikTok explaining the breakup before being asked to take it down.

‘I was in shock, but I was clear. I just wanted people to understand me,’ they said. ‘And it didn’t happen.’

Since their split JoJo and Chris’ relationship has gone from strength to strength with the pair spending time with each other’s families and Chris supporting JoJo in the crowd during her tour. 

Meanwhile Kath is also in a new relationship with love Tilly Lucas-Rodd and the pair are already engaged after they took to Instagram earlier this month to show off their rings. 

Cat Deeley and Patrick Kielty 

The Irish comedian, 54, and This Morning host, 48, who share sons Milo, nine, and James, six, revealed in July that they had taken the decision to end their 12 year marriage, stressing that ‘no other party’ was involved.

Cat and Patrick first met in 2002 while they hosted BBC talent show Fame Academy, however sparks didn’t fly between the couple until 10 years later. 

Patrick turned their friendship to romance by flying all the way from Belfast to Los Angeles last minute for a birthday brunch.

After the grand gesture the pair’s relationship went from strength to strength and they tied the knot in an intimate ceremony in Rome in 2012. 

After a decade living in California, the couple’s decided to leave Los Angeles and move back to London in 2020 before Cat began presenting This Morning in 2024.

And while their split came as a shock to fans, Cat did raise eyebrows after she failed to attend Patrick’s mother’s funeral in Ireland back in March. 

The family are still seething with Cat’s decision to miss the funeral and say they knew at that moment their marriage was over for good.

Her ‘no show’ back in March has left deep emotional scars within the Kielty family who say it confirmed for them that there was little chance of a reconciliation between the two.

Meanwhile Patrick also admitted he felt like a ‘junior shareholder’ in his marriage to Cat prior to their split. 

Speaking on The Mid-Point podcast in July 2023, Patrick told how he thought he was in a ’50/50 partnership’ but then later felt more like a ‘junior shareholder’.

Asked how he and Cat made decisions in their marriage, he said: ‘For a long time I genuinely thought I was in a 50/50 partnership [laughs].

‘Then you realise you’re actually a junior shareholder in a 50/50 partnership.

‘You go, “I thought we were 50/50? Why do you seem to have more shares?”

‘I think with big decisions you kind of have to float stuff and see how that’s going to go. You know, drop that into conversation.’

Jeff Brazier and Kate Dwyer

Jeff announced his split from his wife Kate last month as he revealed the couple had decided to end their seven-year marriage.

In a statement on Instagram Jeff, 46, revealed their marriage broke down over summer after they discovered they couldn’t make each other happy.

Alongside a throwback photo from a family holiday, Jeff made reference to the difficult year they had faced due to fractured relations with his son Freddy, 21.

He told fans: ‘I’m so full of love and gratitude for Kate. For all we achieved, for how much we grew, for everything we endured.

‘We separated in the summer and kept it private for as long as we could to give us some time to adjust.

‘For 12 years we have been each others safe space, each others biggest supporters at a time when our lives have been busy, painful & complex.

‘I’m so proud of how hard we worked, how we kept showing up, we gave everything and more.

‘I’m also so full of respect and admiration for the successful career Kate has built and the way she cared for me unconditionally.’

Jeff said Kate, 35, is still in touch to check in on how his sons are doing, as Freddy prepares to welcome his first child.

The presenter continued: ‘It’s credit to the woman she is that she still checks in to ask how the boys are doing because she is so invested in their lives.

‘They love her and I have many friends that love her too. I will miss her family who always went above and beyond to support us.

‘My words don’t tell the full picture because they don’t need to. We will carry on supporting each other and I know I’ll be celebrating her inevitable wins just like before.

‘We both deserve complete happiness and we’re upset that we ultimately couldn’t be that for one another and It felt time to let it go.’

The couple previously split in late 2022 before reconciling seven months later.

At the time, Kate admitted she ‘felt like a failure’ in her marriage to Jeff before realising every couple has their struggles, following their reconciliation.

Millie Court and Liam Reardon 

They were crowned King and Queen of the Love Island villa back in 2021, and after recovering from a brief split in 2022 the pair’s relationship appeared to be going strong. 

However, this week Daily Mail revealed Millie and Liam had gone their separate ways after the Welsh influencer pulled the plug on their romance. 

Essex girl Millie has been left drowning her sorrows on a girls holiday with pals after being left ‘gutted’. 

A source said: ‘Liam and Millie tried to make it work but eventually it just wasn’t meant to be.

‘Nobody thought they were going to get back together after their initial split, so they’ve done well lasting this long – especially as their lives are based in Wales and Essex respectively.

‘But Liam just wasn’t feeling it towards the end and it was he who instigated the breakup.

‘Millie is gutted but is being a trouper and getting on with life, supported by her girls.’

The breakup is likely to spell the end for the pair’s podcast, Liam and Millie, a collaboration with Sony Music which has aired since October 2024.

After Love Island the pair stayed together for a year before splitting, prompting Liam to take part in E4 show Celebs Go Dating. 

But the pair reconciled over Easter in 2023 after they were spotted on a romantic break in the Lake District.

Their latest breakup comes as Millie openly ‘hinted’ she was ready for Liam to propose – after she showed him what type of engagement ring she would like.

Speaking to the Daily Mail in June, she said: ‘He’s the one in control of proposing and I’ve gave a little hint and showed him a ring that I would like.

‘Not that it means he’ll do it any time soon but I thought better he knows now so when he does decide to, in the future, he knows what ring I like.

‘He also knows what I would like proposal-wise as well, so where it would be and stuff.’
