Years after being misdiagnosed with bipolar disorder, Teen Mom alum Tyler Baltierra finally discovered the real reason behind his mood swings – autism.
‘It felt like a big sigh of relief,’ the 33-year-old certified personal trainer explained Wednesday on his Podcast One show, Cate & Ty: Break It Down.
‘Then I got really sad and I was like, “Wow!” I just thought about all the things I went through as a kid. I just felt so sad for that little kid who wondered, “What’s wrong with me? Something’s wrong, why am I not normal?”‘
Tyler continued: ‘If I would have known about my stuff, being autistic or being on the spectrum, would that have changed my therapy? It got me thinking, “Wow, there’s so many things that could have been different.”‘

Baltierra – who ‘ranked super high in masking’ – recalled being ‘kicked out of schools’ and ‘multiple daycares’ growing up as an ‘ADHD hyper kid’ with his mother trying to manage his ‘meltdowns.’
After the Michigan native took the autism test, the doctor told him his mood swings were based on things not going right in his ‘weird little routines’ and other people like his wife Catelynn will not ‘understand fully’ no matter how much he explains it.
Tyler was inspired to take the test after recognizing similar behavior from his six-year-old daughter Vaeda Luma, and he and the 33-year-old reality star are are also parents of 10-year-old daughter Novalee Reign.
‘First thing I noticed is that small things [that] should not be a big deal are a huge deal to [Vaeda],’ Baltierra noted.
And this Thursday, the married couple of a decade will celebrate the fourth birthday of their youngest daughter, Rya Rose, one week after throwing her an early Little Mermaid-themed bash.
Tyler and Catelynn’s eldest daughter – 16-year-old Carolyn Elizabeth – was adopted in 2009 by a couple called Brandon & Theresa Davis, and they haven’t spoken to her in two years.
As for treatment, Baltierra said he’s just going to ‘try to live with this thing’ as it’s ‘just the way my brain works’ but noted: ‘I think knowing this information makes me better aware.’
