Taylor Swift’s Engagement Overshadows Blake Lively’s Birthday

Taylor Swift’s engagement to Travis Kelce overshadowed her former pal Blake Lively’s 38th birthday, amid their recent fallout.

The pop star, 35, and the NFL player, 35, revealed their engagement news on Tuesday, just hours after Lively’s big day.

And though the power couple caused an avalanche of congratulations from famous friends, Lively notably stayed silent.

Swift’s longtime pals, supermodel Gigi Hadid, Karlie Kloss and Cara Delevingne were quick to like the post, showing support from her girl squad. 

But though Lively was active on her Instagram, as she re-posted a number of birthday wishes to her Stories, she did not acknowledge Swift’s happy news. 

The tension between the former friends blew up after Swift’s name got dragged into Lively’s 2024 legal battle with Justin Baldoni — his lawyers claimed Lively tried to ‘coerce’ Swift into a public statement and delete texts — and even though a subpoena was later dropped, the drama clearly left its mark. 

The Karma hitmaker did not mark Lively’s birthday with any social media posts, though she unveiled the seventh cover for her 12th studio album The Life of a Showgirl via her Instagram on Monday. 

It all did not go unnoticed by fans, and social media was flooded with speculation about the state of their friendship afterwards.

Some users found it odd that Swift made the announcement so close to Lively’s birthday, seemingly overshadowing her big day.

Others theorized that Lively’s incessant posting to her Stories and lack of like on Swift’s announcement was a sign that they are not on good terms anymore.

‘Dude, what is going on between Blake and Taylor? Also, why did Taylor choose to announce engagement around Blake Lively’s birthday?’ one fan wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

‘Can we talk about how yesterday Blake Lively had her birthday, and just today Taylor announced her engagement?’ asked another.

‘I didn’t see the like on her post either. They hate each other, I have no proof or doubts.’

‘Why does no one talk about that Taylor posted on Blake’s birthday and Blake didn’t congratulate her… that friendship is really over huh,’ someone else theorized.

‘So nothing from Blake Lively for Taylor huh? Only bday reposts?’ read a fourth tweet.

A fifth said, ‘Blake Lively posting nothing about Taylor Swift’s engagement honestly makes me sad.’

‘The fact that Blake hasn’t posted about Taylor’s engagement says VOLUMES about the state of their friendship right now,’ a different user penned. 

‘Blake was online as well making bday reposts,’ replied someone else.

‘Wow, Blake posting all about her birthday on IG stories, right after Taylor’s engagement is announced. I think that says everything about where those two stand. Blake f**ked up big time,’ added another person. 

The snub comes after Swift has reportedly cut off communication with Lively as she gears up to release a new album fans believe contains a diss track aimed at the actress. 

On August 13, Swift announced her upcoming album, which will include a track titled Ruin the Friendship — a song rumored to be about her relationship with Lively.

Meanwhile, Lively re-shared a number wishes from pals, including her Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants co-star Amber Tamblyn on Tuesday. 

Tamblyn called Lively ‘my sister from another mister’ and praised her for ‘making people’s lives better.’ 

Another one of her pals, Gabrielle Travaglia, praised Lively for making ‘everything brighter.’ 

Lively celebrated her 38th birthday on Monday, following a challenging year marked by her legal battle with Baldoni.

Lively’s birthday plans would include a celebration with family, a source told People.

Swift previously shared sweet birthday wishes for the star publicly in 2016, on Lively’s 29th birthday.

The Bad Blood singer posted a throwback photo with the sweet caption: ‘You’re a wonderful friend, to humans and koalas alike.’

Swift continued, ‘I absolutely love you,’ and included, ‘HAPPY BIRTHDAY BLAKE’ in all caps. 

But now, a source close to the situation told People, ‘Taylor and Blake aren’t speaking.’

The pair weren’t always at odds — their friendship stretches back to 2014 and was once famously tight.

Swift, who serves as godmother to Lively and Ryan Reynolds’ daughters, even wove the family into her music.

Lively and Reynolds’ daughter James has a voice cameo on Swift’s Reputation track Gorgeous.

All three girls — James, Inez, and Betty — are also name-dropped in Folklore, showing just how closely their lives were once intertwined.

Swift, whose hit song ‘My Tears Ricochet’ was featured on the soundtrack of the 2024 film It Ends With Us, was pulled into the rollercoaster saga earlier this year when Baldoni filed a $400million countersuit accusing Lively and her husband Ryan of defamation.

Explosive text messages from Baldoni’s complaint revealed Lively had referred to the superstar singer and her husband, as ‘my dragons’ in an alleged bid to intimidate him over their ill-fated flick It Ends With Us.

Baldoni also claimed that Swift was present at a pivotal meeting about the movie, held by Lively and Reynolds at their New York penthouse.

For her part, a source close to Swift has said she simply arrived to find the meeting underway and had no involvement.

In January, an insider told Daily Mail: ‘Her friends also think that Blake’s ‘I’m Khaleesi, and like her, I happen to have dragons’ text to Justin was uncool and unnecessary because she was essentially used as an intimidation tactic. She was referred to as some kind of pet or possession.’

Since then, Swift has reportedly been trying to distance herself from the scandal as well as her friendship with Lively.

Those efforts have included icing Lively out of her inner circle while boyfriend Travis Kelce has unfollowed Reynolds on Instagram.
