Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s Engagement Sparks Hilarious Memes, Fans Call It America’s ‘Royal Wedding’

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce sent the Internet into a frenzy on Tuesday as they announced the news that they were engaged.

The singer and the NFL star, both 35, took to Instagram to share a slew of loved-up snaps from the romantic proposal, surrounded by a lavish floral display, and the huge oval-cut diamond ring – estimated to be worth between £750,000 and £1 million.

Beaming in pure joy in the pictures, Taylor captioned the post: ‘Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married’, followed by a dynamite emoji referencing the couple’s ‘TNT’ nickname.

It took only minutes for the news that the world’s biggest pop star and three-time Super Bowl winner were getting hitched to spread across social media, exploding into hundreds of memes and fan reactions.

Swifties were quick to voice their elation and tears for their idol, comparing the upcoming nuptials to a royal wedding, poking fun at their parasocial levels of excitement and quipping that they were unable to work following the news.

While others couldn’t help but mock how the news had turned into a viral cultural moment – with even President Donald Trump being asked for his thoughts on the engagement – and joke that Taylor would use her vows to announce her next album.

Taking to social media to react, fans wrote: ‘deeply parasocial of me but i feel like my own sister got engaged rn’; ‘hope the wedding is small just taylor and me and travis i guess’

‘this is gonna be the closest thing america has ever had to a royal wedding’; ‘when she announces another album during her vows’.

The official City of Cleveland account also took part in the fun, retweeting the proposal photos with the caption: ‘Local man and his new fiancée stun in engagement pics.’ 

While Taylor’s caption jokingly calling her and Travis an English teacher and a gym teacher, sparked even more viral memes of people jokingly pairing other celebrities together, with brands including Pixar and The Sims getting in on the action.

And fans also made sure to include Travis’ brother and fellow football star Jason Kelce, with ESPN leading the posts by sharing a throwback video of the Philadelphia Eagles star dancing up a storm with the caption: ‘Wedding Jason Kelce loading’.

While the official account for brothers’ podcast New Heights sent fans into hysterics as they shared an edited version of the snap of Travis getting down on one knee, to include a shirtless Jason cheering in the background.

They captioned it: ‘This pretty much sums up everyone’s reaction’. 

Since the announcement, Daily Mail revealed that Travis proposed to Taylor earlier this month and he planned the gorgeous scene for the all-important question.

‘Travis 100 percent planned this by himself,’ an insider exclusively told us, adding that the Kansas City Chiefs star has ‘had a plan for a long time now’ for how he would propose.

‘He wanted it to be completely traditional,’ the insider said. ‘That he would choose the ring and ask for her to marry him.’

‘Based on what he’s told me, she would want the whole thing to be traditional, too. She wants him to take the lead,’ the insider added. 

When the time came, and as is tradition, Kelce first sought the permission of Swift’s parents, 73-year-old Scott and 67-year-old Andrea Swift.

‘It was of extreme importance to do that, because he wanted it to mean something for everyone involved,’ our insider said. ‘This is a dream for him, and he knows that Taylor always wanted to get married.’

While Travis’ father Ed has revealed that Taylor was getting ‘a little antsy’ about the athlete taking too long to pop the question, while sharing further details about the couple’s fairytale proposal. 

He explained that the surprise proposal took place near the sportsman’s home in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, after telling his son not to worry about making the affair too lavish and he could ask Taylor ‘at the side of the road’. 

Ed told News 5 Cleveland: ‘[Travis] was going to put it off till this week. I think [Taylor] was getting maybe a little antsy, but he was going to put her off till this week, to, you know, make some grand thing, to make it a big special event.

‘And I told him repeatedly, you know, you could do it on the side of the road, do it any place that makes it a special event… when you get down on one knee and ask her to marry you.

‘They’re just so good together, and they’re just so happy. I haven’t seen him happier.’

Daily Mail also revealed how Taylor’s engagement huge engagement ring was created especially for her by Florida-based designer Kindred Lubeck of Artifex Fine Jewellery.

Travis’ close friend Patrick Mahomes was quick to congratulate the couple, sharing the post on Instagram with three heart emojis.

While Taylor’s longtime pals, supermodel Gigi Hadid, Karlie Kloss, and Cara Delevingne were quick to like the post, showing support from her girl squad.

But Blake Lively was absent from the list of likes, continuing a rocky chapter in her friendship with the Shake It Off singer.

Taylor and Travis went public with their relationship in September 2023, when she was seen with Kelce’s mother Donna, cheering him on at a Kansas City Chiefs game. 

Since that day, their romance has captivated the world, with Taylor supporting Travis’s run to two Super Bowls while the NFL star has travelled alongside her around the globe on her wildly successful Eras Tour.

Prior to Travis, Taylor was in a six-year romance with actor Joe Alwyn, 34, which ended in April 2023. She then briefly dated The 1975 frontman Matty Healy, 36.

The engagement news comes almost two weeks after Taylor announced her new album, The Life of a Showgirl, on the Kelce brothers’ podcast, New Heights.
