The late Queen once surprised the nation by disclosing an unlikely passion for Doctor Who – but her successor is getting fired up about something far more sinister than Daleks: Alan Sugar’s ruthless business antics.
I can reveal that King Charles and Queen Camilla are ‘massive fans’ of The Apprentice, the BBC reality show for aspiring – and often dim-witted – entrepreneurs.
Karren Brady let slip the news at a screening of the upcoming 20th series at the Soho Hotel last week.
She said: ‘Well, I don’t know if I’m allowed to say this, and if not, I’m going to get shot but I’m going to say it anyway – two huge fans of the show are His Majesty the King and the Queen.’
Baroness Brady, who has been Lord Sugar’s aide on the hit show since 2010, claims the royals even request sneak peeks.
‘They often ask for previews of the show,’ she explained. ‘They like to watch it.’
She also admitted she wants to capitalise on the royals’ devoted fandom, saying: ‘I think it would be great to host one of the tasks at a royal palace. So maybe not a task about the royals, but Buckingham Palace would be a great place to set a task.’
Lord Sugar was also at the screening – and his savvy eyes lit up at the prospect. He even suggested: ‘How about a renegotiation to bring Harry back into the fold?’
Who knows? Perhaps a little of the computer tycoon’s no-nonsense finger-pointing might be just the thing to sort out the intractable royal feud.
