It’s been an exciting week for the actress as it was announced she is set to star as boxer Christy Martin in a biopic directed by filmmaker David Michôd.

The biopic starring the Euphoria actress as the Hall of Fame boxer, 55, will be put on the market at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival, according to Deadline, which broke the news of the casting.

The Emmy-nominated actress shared a link on Instagram to the Deadline article confirming her next role, saying she was ‘honoured to tell Christy’s powerful story.’

‘I grappled and did kickboxing from 12-19 years old,’ Sydney told Deadline about her preparations. ‘I’ve been itching to get back into the ring, train, and transform my body.

‘Christy’s story isn’t a light one, it’s physically and emotionally demanding, there’s a lot of weight to carry. But I love challenging myself.’

She professed her admiration for Martin and her credentials, saying, ‘Christy Martin not only legitimized female boxing, she overcame gender stereotypes, and fought through emotional, physical, and financial abuse.

‘I’m passionate about the fighting world, Christy’s story shines a light on her incredible rise to the top while showing the struggles of fame behind the curtains.’

The White Lotus alum said she ‘feels compelled to tell a story about a woman who faced so much adversity and didn’t allow it to defeat her,’ calling her life story ‘powerful and emotional.’

Director David, whose past credits include War Machine, Animal Kingdom and The Rover, said Christy’s rise to prominence in the boxing world in the 1990s makes for a story that producers of the film compared to that of a ‘female Rocky’ Balboa.

David told the outlet: ‘I have a history of making movies about damaged men and I’d been wanting to make a film about a woman with a ferocious energy inside her.

‘When I came across the Christy Martin story two years ago I knew I’d found it. Her ferocity is intelligible and justifiable and audiences will crave it because of the circumstances she was forced to endure’.

Sydney has been on a professional roll, as she recently appeared in the 2023 romantic comedy Anyone But You alongside Glen Powell; and starred in the horror movie Immaculate.

Christy, who was Don King’s first-ever female client, gained national spotlight in March of 1996 when she captured the World Boxing Council women’s lightweight championship in a bloody Las Vegas bout against Deirdre Gogarty.

Christy, who was nicknamed The Coalminer’s Daughter, was on the undercard of the infamous 1997 bout in which Mike Tyson bit the ear of Evander Holyfield.

She is also the only female boxer to ever be featured on the cover of the magazine Sports Illustrated.

Producer Kerry Kohansky-Roberts told Deadline, ‘To make the cover of Sports Illustrated was hard enough, to do it as a female boxer was outstanding and she paved the way for so many boxers and MMA fighters to come’.

She also fought Laila Ali, the daughter of late boxing icon Muhammad Ali, in a high-profile 2003 bout in which Laila knocked her out.
