Sydney Sweeney Confuses Euphoria Fans with Season 3’s Religious Theme Tease

Sydney Sweeney gave one of the first real teases about the long-awaited third season of Euphoria, the breakout series that turned her into a household name as troubled teen Cassie Howard.

Addressing the years-long delay between seasons, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2023 writers’ and actors’ strikes, the two-time Emmy nominee, 28, revealed on Tuesday’s episode of Good Morning America that she had just wrapped filming her scenes earlier this week.

When asked what fans can expect from the new season, Sweeney kept things cryptic, offering only: ‘The only thing I can say is it’s about God.’

After a beat of stunned silence from the show’s hosts, she elaborated: ‘People are going to find God; some people are going to need God.’

The Anyone But You star grinned slyly as the anchors reacted in surprise, with Sam Champion admitting, ‘I could have made a list of things I was expecting and that would not have been there.’

‘Honestly, same!’ Sweeney replied with a laugh.

During her appearance, the Fifty-Fifty Films founder also discussed landing the titular role of Christy Martin in her upcoming biopic Christy, which hits theaters on Friday.

Despite her own background in mixed martial arts (MMA), which began as a teenager, Sweeney admits she have never heard of the world champion boxer.

After learning how Martin broke barriers for women and survived a domestic abuse, the performer became determined to get be a part of the film in anyway.

‘I remember when I got on the first Zoom with the director, I was like, “I don’t care. I want to produce this. I just want to be a part of telling her story.” Because I think as  Christy says, she wants it to save lives,’ Sweeney explained.

To train for the role, she turned her grandma’s garage in Idaho into a Rocky-inspired gym and gained 36 pounds.

In September, she revealed her diet prior included ‘a lot of Chick-fil-A, a lot, a lot of Smucker’s, a lot of milkshakes, [and] a lot of protein shakes.’

This week Sweeney also broke her silence on her American Eagle jeans commercial controversy.

Over the summer, the actress starred in a viral ad for the brand’s jeans, which provoked a social media meltdown.

The commercial, titled ‘Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans,’ showed the star buttoning up a set of denim trousers and offering a playful pun on the word ‘genes.’

‘Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye color… my jeans are blue,’ she said.

The campaign was met with an explosion of controversy upon its launch in July, as social media users feverishly accused it of being racist and flirting with eugenics in light of its star’s blonde-haired, azure-eyed appearance.

‘I did a jean ad. I mean, the reaction definitely was a surprise, but I love jeans. All I wear are jeans. I’m literally in jeans and a T-shirt every day of my life,’ Sweeney told GQ.

When asked her response to Trump speaking about the ad, Sweeney described the moment as ‘surreal’.

‘I kind of just put my phone away,’ she continued.

‘I was filming every day. I’m filming Euphoria, so I’m working 16-hour days and I don’t really bring my phone on set, so I work and then I go home and I go to sleep.

‘So I didn’t really see a lot of it.’
