Matt ‘Shirvo’ Shirvington and Monique Wright were left gobsmacked on Friday morning when they were confronted with a bizarre comedian on live TV.
Weird Sal, the less attractive cousin of Weird Al Yankovic – who is best known for his comedic parody songs – appeared on Sunrise to serenade the anchors during a live cross to the Sydney Fringe Festival.
While there were plenty of awkward laughs during Weird Sal’s song Where Dreams Are Broken – a parody of Hilary Duff’s What Dreams Are Made Of – Matt, 45, and Monique, 50, were mostly speechless during the awkward performance.
They cringeworthy exchange began when Sunrise weatherman Sam Mac introduced Weird Sal to viewers as the Australian cousin of Weird Al.
‘Mr Macaroni, I have spent a lot of days writing parodies, and then my more attractive cousin he just took them all and ran with it,’ Weird Sal said.

Monique let slip an awkward chuckle as Matt appeared to cringe at the gravelly voice the young comedian donned as she slipped on a fake moustache and unkept wig that didn’t cover her real, long blonde locks.
Sam attempted to keep the bit going, as he asked: ‘Am I sensing a little bit of resentment to Weird Al Yankovic?’
Weird Sal replied: ‘You know it comes and goes in waves. It comes in the usual cease and desist, day-to-day, restraining order every couple months.’

‘I feel like you communicate best through song,’ Sam said before throwing to the weather.
But things only got more bizarre when Weird Sal began her parody Where Dreams Are Broken – a twist on the Disney song What Dreams Are Made Of from the Lizzie McGuire Movie.
Weird Sal performed the song off-key with some awkward dance moves to boot as she made uncomfortable eye contact with the camera.
Throughout the rendition, Monique’s jaw dropped and Matt’s frown deepened as they were left speechless by the show, which abruptly stopped when the music was cut without warning.

‘That’s a little taste of the action. Love the abrupt cut of the music, as well,’ Sam said as Weird Sal gave the camera an awkward wave.
‘I’m glad it was a little taste. Better with a crowd reaction, I reckon,’ Shirvo said.
‘I think I want Weird Sal to go before me at karaoke,’ Monique added.
The pair then quickly moved on to other news as their co-stars Mark Beretta and Edwina Bartholomew fought back tears of laughter, having enjoyed the performance much more than their colleagues.
