The REAL reasons so many showbiz wives stand by husbands accused of sexual harassment: Friends of couples reveal all to KATIE HIND… and tell why many will think them ‘deeply misguided’

At her recent 50th birthday party in London’s exclusive Soho House, Gino D’Acampo’s wife, Jessica, was spotted in deep conversation with Phillip Schofield’s spouse, Stephanie Lowe. With both women linked to men caught up in a storm of unseemly allegations, no wonder fellow guests were intrigued.

If Jessica and Stephanie were discussing claims that Italian chef Gino behaved inappropriately on the sets of his TV programmes – including displaying his genitals to staff – they hid it well.

Yet Jessica surely has found an understanding ear in Stephanie, 61, who has also been the subject of considerable speculation, not least over the fact she and Schofield are yet to formally divorce.

They claim to have split following his affair with a much younger male colleague on ITV’s This Morning but still spend most of their time together.

‘Jessica’s party was straight off the back of allegations that Gino had stroked his genitals on set, that he would thrust his crotch at staff and that he was pretty horrid,’ said a source close to the two families. ‘Yet there she was, posing for pictures with him.’

If anything, the furore has brought the pair closer, the source adds: ‘This has hit them both hard, but Jessica knows the truth.’

Chef Gino D’Acampo and wife Jessica, who is standing by her scandal-hit  husband

Such loyalty is something of a must-have quality in the wives of certain TV stars these days. Take the scandal that engulfed Schofield, which seems only to have strengthened his bond with Stephanie. As a friend of hers said: ‘Stephanie is so keen to show her loyalty even though he was having a relationship with a man behind her back.’

Then there’s Gregg Wallace’s better half, Anne-Marie Sterpini, who had to endure weeks of headlines about his lewd behaviour during the 19 years he co-hosted MasterChef.

While such allegations would have shattered many couples, Anne-Marie, 38 still describes herself as ‘wife to Gregg Wallace’ in her Instagram biography (followed by a red loveheart emoji) and Wallace, 60, was recently seen wearing his wedding ring.

Similarly Wynne Evans’s girlfriend Liz Brookes, 50, has stood by the GoCompare singer, 53, despite what must have been a humiliating episode for her.

The Mail on Sunday revealed he made a disgusting suggestion of a three-way sex act involving professional dancer Janette Manrara, 41, as they promoted the Strictly Come Dancing live tour. But a source close to Evans said: ‘Everyone’s rallying around Wynne – Liz included. He is appreciative of all the support he is getting.’

Even Giada Lini, the wife of former Strictly professional Graziano Di Prima, 30, has remained at his side despite the BBC sacking him for kicking his partner Zara McDermott during rehearsals.

So just why are these women refusing to condemn their partners for their bad behaviour?

Stephanie Lowe and Phillip Schofield still have not divorced despite being seperated

One source familiar with some of the wives tells me it is often because they believe their partners’ protestations of innocence.

‘Most of these men deny they did anything wrong,’ says the insider. ‘They are adamant that it either didn’t happen or say there are mitigating factors to minimise the claims against them.

‘They say these things in public, so imagine how much they are saying behind closed doors. They promise it will all go away and hire expensive crisis PRs to stop stories coming out.’

Of course, for some women there is a culture of always siding with their partner over a rival female.

‘It’s not just the wives of celebrities who don’t believe it’s their partner’s fault when they cheat,’ says the source. ‘It is common among so many women; they simply won’t believe the other female.’

The mental fragility of the partner can be a factor, too. Schofield, 62, said he wanted to take his own life after he confessed he had lied over his secret romance with a much younger man. Evans has cited his ‘wellbeing’ as a reason for lying low after his scandal broke. Di Prima did the same.

A friend of one of the wives tells me: ‘Can you imagine the guilt of the women if they walk away and then something happens to their partner? It must be difficult to leave someone if they are saying they are suicidal or severely struggling with their mental health.’

The insider cites Giada Lini as an example. ‘She took part in a joint interview with Graziano to show her support while his PR was briefing about concerns for his mental health. How could you just walk away?’

Then there is the question of money and security. To the outside world, these stars are fabulously wealthy, but the truth is – Schofield aside – they rarely are. D’Acampo still lives a fairly modest life and, if he were to divorce, his finances would be cut in half.

Wallace and Anne-Marie will naturally want to keep their family life stable not just for their own sake, but for their autistic son, Sid.

And Evans’s stock might have fallen heavily, but he remains a big celebrity in Wales.

‘It’s often about the status,’ said the source: ‘The women enjoy a certain lifestyle and they don’t want to lose that. But that doesn’t mean others don’t think they are deeply misguided.’

Phillip Schofield’s helping hand for pal Gino D’Acampo: Former This Morning presenter ‘supporting’ embattled Italian chef following allegations of sexually inappropriate behaviour

If anyone knows what it’s like to see their career in turmoil, it’s Phillip Schofield.

And the former TV presenter is now putting the experience of his downfall to use, by supporting embattled chef Gino D’Acampo.

The Italian star, 48, who regularly appeared on ITV’s This Morning when Schofield was a co-host, has been ‘cancelled’ following multiple allegations of sexually inappropriate and intimidating behaviour.

But The Mail on Sunday can reveal that the pair have remained close since their TV days together, and Schofield is helping the chef after numerous women came forward claiming he behaved badly towards them.

Schofield’s wife Stephanie Lowe, from whom he is separated but not divorced, is close to D’Acampo’s wife Jessica.

The four have stayed in touch since Schofield stood down from This Morning in May 2023, and he and Ms Lowe were guests at Mrs D’Acampo’s 50th birthday celebrations at members’ club Soho House last month.

A friend of the two men said: ‘Phil and Gino always got on well. He was part of the This Morning family for a long time so Phil has kept in contact with him, and he is a very good listener.

‘Phil knows what it’s like to go through losing his TV career, so he’s been a good support. As well as working together, their wives are close.

‘Mental health is something Phil cares about deeply. He wants to help where he can.’

The source also pointed out that both believe they were treated unfairly by ITV.

Schofield, 62, maintains he was ousted for having an affair with a man, and that if he had been a straight man having a romance with a younger woman he would have been treated differently.

Meanwhile, D’Acampo says the broadcaster encouraged him to behave in a ‘laddy’ and ‘flirty way’ before they axed him earlier this month.

‘You can just imagine what they would have to say about ITV during their chats,’ their friend said. D’Acampo’s inappropriate behaviour was first revealed by this newspaper in March 2023.

Earlier this month, an ITV News investigation uncovered multiple allegations against him. He now faces claims from dozens of people who have described his conduct over the past 12 years as ‘distressing’, ‘unacceptable’ and even ‘horrendous’.

According to the report, one production company was aware of repeated complaints from staff about Gino’s behaviour, yet continued to work with him on further projects.

One woman given the pseudonym Hannah claims that, during a magazine shoot in 2011, Gino humiliated her in front of the crew by saying he would ‘like to turn me over and f*** me up the a*** against the kitchen counter’.

D’Acampo has denied all the allegations, calling them ‘deeply upsetting’. He has instructed a crisis communications firm and vowed to tell his side of the story.

Phillip Schofield celebrates at engagement party amid TV comeback

Phillip Schofield sipped on fizz as he celebrated on a night out with his wife Stephanie Lowe and a group of pals on Saturday at a pub in west London.

The disgraced presenter, 62, – who was at an engagement party for a friend – was seen out for the first time since since taking aim at the ‘three s***s of showbiz’ amid his controversial TV comeback.

He secretly filmed a special three part series for Channel 5, which required him to give up his home comforts for some soul-searching on a tropical island in the Indian Ocean.

It will be the first time he has been on TV since leaving the ITV’s This Morning in May 2023 after admitting to a relationship with a much younger male colleague. In a clip of the show released on Saturday, he took aim at those ‘who betrayed him’.

But on Saturday night, the star, who came out as gay in 2020, looked care free as he joined his loved ones – including his wife and friends – at the pub and even brought along his pet pooch, just 48 hours ahead of the new show’s first episode.

A source told MailOnline: ‘Phillip was with his wife and a group of friends. He seemed in good spirits and looked like he was enjoying himself.

‘It looked like they were attending an engagement party for a friend and he helped himself to some cake too.’

The former ITV star later shared a goodbye hug with a pal before hopping into a waiting taxi.

It comes following reports that ITV bosses were furious at the star’s claims he would have been treated differently if he had had an affair with a woman rather than a man.

In Cast Away, Schofield says he would have got a ‘pat on the back’ if it wasn’t a homosexual relationship, before taking aim at the ‘three s***s of showbiz’ who betrayed him as he ranted about his downfall.

In his much-criticised television comeback on Channel 5 programme Cast Away, he refers to himself as the ‘shamed, disgraced Philip Schofield, who had an affair’.

He said: ‘Strangely, I think another TV presenter or two might have done exactly the same thing. Difference is heterosexual. It’s not an unusual thing in the gay world for there to be a difference in age groups.

In the programme, which airs from Monday, Schofield takes aim at a trio of his former ITV colleagues, saying: ‘I think there are only three s**ts’

‘That’s not that unusual in the straight world, but if that had been the case with me and it had been a woman. Pat on the back. Well done, mate.’

Schofield said that he ‘has regrets’ and acknowledges he ‘got something wrong’ and ‘hurt the people’ around him.

‘I don’t know what price you’re supposed to pay and whether the price you’re paying is necessarily proportionate,’ he adds.

Hitting back, a source at the channel said: ‘It’s a stupid thing for Phil to say, and it is just not true. Phil lied to his colleagues, his bosses and his friends about it, it wouldn’t have mattered if it was a woman or a man.’

They add that Schofield is unlikely to work with the channel again despite his hints that he had been approached to appear on their reality show, I’m A Celeb. One source said: ‘He lied to us, it would be really, really difficult.’

In the programme, which airs from Monday, Schofield takes aim at a trio of his former ITV colleagues, saying: ‘I think there are only three s**ts.’

He pointed out that one was a ‘coward who never stepped up in queue gate,’ while another ‘is a coward because they never stepped up when I was being battered by that one journalist who thought I’d got them fired.’

The third, Schofield says ‘is just brand orientated. Not what you expect, not what you think you’re going to get.’

Continuing to take aim at those who he believes wrong him, Phillip added of his formerly long-standing TV career: ‘They know how important that was to me.

‘They know when you throw someone under a bus, you’ve got to have a really bloody good reason to do it. Brand, ambition is not good enough’, reports The Sun.

He went on: ‘People can be fake. They can be so fake with you when it’s all going well, and suddenly utter, utter betrayal.

‘There are a lot of amazing people in morning television.’

He also insisted that he has now quit television and doesn’t want to make a return despite filming the three-part show for Channel 5 which sees him having to survive alone in Madagascar.

While Phillip failed to disclose which ITV figures he was referring to, he did take the opportunity to take a brutal swipe at his ex-colleagues.

Despite mentioning ITV Co-stars Ant, 48, and Dec, 49, as well as Joanna Lumley, 78, his former pal Holly Willoughby isn’t mentioned at all throughout the 45-minute episode.

In one outburst which will leave viewers wondering whether it is aimed at her, Schofield says: ‘When you throw someone under a bus, you’ve got to have a really bloody good reason to do it.

‘I got into telly because I love the nuts and bolts of telly, I never wanted to be famous. I’m not fussed about that.

‘I miss parts of it. I miss most of it, I’m honest. But there are bits that I really, really, really don’t miss. You learn a lot about people. I don’t miss that.’

ITV’s fury comes as Schofield also hints that he was fired from the network when in fact the first its chiefs learned of his departure was in statement to the Mail where he admitted the affair and said he left with immediate effect.

Sources at the broadcaster also say that he chose to step back from presenting This Morning a fortnight before following a fall out with his former co-star Holly Willoughby.

Meanwhile during the programme, Phillip and his family appeared to mock Holly’s famous ‘are you ok?’ clip as he made his return to TV.

Phillip was ousted from This Morning in May last year, after he admitted to lying about his relationship with a much younger male colleague.

Holly distanced herself from her former best friend and during a ‘highly strategised’ return to the This Morning sofa in June 2023, she told viewers she had been left ‘shaken, let down and worried.’

When she returned, she began by saying: ‘Hello, Firstly, are you okay? I hope so. It feels very strange sat here without Phil.’

Appearing to reference the now-famous speech on Cast Away, Phillip is seen having a BBQ with his family before heading off to the island.

In a clip obtained by The Sun, he gives out food to his wife Stephanie and their daughters Molly,  31, and Ruby, 28, and laughs: ‘If you’re ok, then we’re ok, and I’m ok…are you ok?’

No mention of Holly is made in the clip.

The Channel 5 show also took a dark turn when Phillip told how he had ‘everything in place’ for a suicide attempt, but decided against it when his eldest daughter Molly persuaded him not to.

Speaking on the first episode of the three-part series which airs on Monday, the former This Morning host said: ‘In the last eighteen months, it got as dark as it is possible to get.

‘A year ago I got so, so close. I had everything in place, everything was set up and everything was ready and it was Molly that was looking after me.’

He explained: ‘Molly and Ruby both looking after me at the time, and Molly said: ‘Do you imagine what this would do to us if you actually managed to pull this off? Can you imagine what would happen and can you imagine what it would do to me if you did this on my watch?’

The disgraced presenter revealed this week he was taking part in his own survival show just 16 months on from leaving This Morning after admitting to having an ‘unwise but not illegal’ fling with a junior male colleague.

Phillip Schofield Cast Away, which is a three-part series, can be streamed on Channel 5 at 9pm on September 30, October 7 and October 14.

During the show, he will discuss his bitter parting of ways with ITV and This Morning, which he hosted for 21 years, while fending for himself on the island paradise, located off the coast of Madagascar.

His wife Stephanie’s world came crashing down when, in May 2023, it finally became public knowledge that Phillip had conducted a years-long affair with a much-younger male ITV colleague.

Phil and Stephanie have never legally divorced with sources close to the couple saying previously that she ‘still loves him’ deeply and will always remain in his ‘support system’ with their daughters Molly and Ruby.

Phillip has not worked since he left This Morning in May 2023 shortly before the affair was revealed. His co-host and once close friend, Holly Willoughby, later left herself, with Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard taking over their roles.

Phillip quit ITV entirely after admitting he had lied to the Daily Mail about his the affair.

Friends of the star were ‘quite certain’ he would never work again following his admission, but Channel 5 changed this.

One said at the time: ‘Phillip has been very, very down recently. He doesn’t know how he is going to work again. It’s devastating for him to realise but he also knows that there is not a lot he can do about it. He doesn’t know who will take him. He knows there is no way back to ITV or the BBC.’

Sources close to Schofield say that his friends are trying to encourage him to think he can have a ‘fulfilling life’ away from showbusiness.

One said: ‘Just because he may not be on telly again doesn’t mean he can’t enjoy his life. Phil isn’t so sure though.’

Before the Channel 5 gig, Phillip was tipped for a job on national radio – his ‘first love’ – with Britain’s largest commercial stations said to be jostling to bring him in to woo new listeners from rivals, including BBC Radio 2.

An ITV report in December 2023 cleared bosses of a cover-up of the affair and did not mention any further damaging claims about Schofield’s relationship with a young runner on the show.

Despite claims of a ‘whitewash’, industry insiders told MailOnline that it opens the door to the star getting a new big-money deal to return to work in 2024.

But a senior British broadcasting source said a return to TV for Mr Schofield is ‘unlikely – for now’.

Phillip infamously described the affair as 'unwise but not illegal'. He admitted he once met the man at 15, but insisted they did not begin a relationship till he was 20 (both pictured with Holly)

He said: ‘Now that a line has been drawn in the sand by ITV over the Schofield saga, attention will move on.

‘Within a period of time there is now a place for Phillip to return, possibly not on TV yet, but there are now a myriad of opportunities for him on commercial radio where he will be offered big money to return to his first love.

‘The KC’s report gives him a fresh chance – but nobody will be surprised at all to see that ITV has found itself in the clear as it tries to save This Morning’.

Neither Phillip nor his former partner spoke to Jane Mulcahy KC, whose report came out in December.

Ms Mulcahy found that the unnamed runner’s promotion from This Morning to Loose Women ‘had nothing to do’ with Schofield and claimed that also ‘only one person’ interviewed had knowledge of the affair but ‘did not report their knowledge at time’.

Stephanie poignantly told The Sun at the time: ‘I will still be there, holding his hand. Everyone should be proud to live their own truth.

‘Our family have also been so supportive and will help us going forward. Although this is difficult for us all, I support Phillip in taking this brave step.’

But, Stephanie’s world came crashing down when, in May 2023, it finally became public knowledge that Phillip had conducted a years-long affair with a much-younger male ITV colleague.

Phil and Stephanie have reportedly never legally divorced with sources close to the couple saying previously that she ‘still loves him’ deeply and will always remain in his ‘support system’ with their daughters Molly and Ruby.

Phillip started out in local radio in New Zealand as a teenager before joining the BBC, hosting a popular show on Radio 1 while presenting Going Live.

It now remains to be seen whether Britain’s most popular stations, such as Classic FM, Magic, Virgin, Heart or other giants now swoop. Greatest Hits Radio has also been on a hiring spree, grabbing big names such as Ken Bruce and Simon Mayo to take listeners from Radio 2.

But sources have said Phillip could soon be back in work.

Furious ITV staff blasted the external report into Schofield’s affair with a younger colleague as a ‘whitewash’.

One employee told the Mail of their ‘sheer bewilderment’ that only one junior worker was aware of the relationship.

The report found that ITV did not cover up the relationship and that station bosses had made ‘considerable efforts’ to discover the truth in 2019 – four years before the affair broke.

But, all is now well between Phillip and Stephanie (both pictured in November 2021)

The external review found that the channel was ‘unable to uncover the relevant evidence’ until Phillip’s own admission in May when he told the Mail that he had been having the relationship and that he had later lied about it.

ITV bosses have said both Phillip and his former lover, who has never been named publicly, ‘repeatedly denied’ allegations of a relationship until the star dramatically quit ITV and formally apologised.

It added that only one person out of 48 interviewed – a junior employee – said they knew about the presenter’s relationship with the younger male former colleague before he revealed it.

Ms Mulcahy revealed that Phillip refused to take part in the review into the circumstances surrounding the his departure because of ‘the risk to his health’. She added that she was informed that the host’s mental health had since deteriorated.

Phillip’s former colleague and lover also declined to participate in the report.

In April, Phillip and Stephanie were pictured amicably carrying matching brown cockapoos ‘from the same litter’ on his 62nd birthday – just days after their 31st wedding anniversary.

It is not known if they spent that special day together.

Friends of Phillip’s have said recently that he has been down and trying to find ‘fulfilling’ ways to enjoy life away from broadcasting because his career and reputation has been tarnished.

And it appears he and his wife may have decided to get a dog each to help them through some tough times.

‘Stephanie has continued to support her estranged husband – now they appear to both have new puppies from the same litter’, one onlooker said.

Phillip Schofield seemed in high spirits as he laughed at a London lunch with his daughter Molly and male friend Scott Brown, while still wearing his wedding ring.

The presenter left ITV under a huge cloud in May 2023, after admitting that he had an affair with a younger colleague on the show.

He seemed to be in a good mood on Thursday when he was spotted eating al fresco with his pal Scott and Molly May, 31, outside the Ham Yard Hotel in London’s Soho.

Phillip and his wife Stephanie Lowe separated in 2020 after he came out as gay, but she continued to stand by him and they did not legally divorce.

The TV personality was notably still wearing his wedding ring in the snaps of his lunch outing, after it was reported Stephanie has not filed for divorce because ‘she still loves him’ and is his ‘support system’.

Meanwhile Molly kept it simple in a black sweater, which she paired with huge sunglasses.

In May last year, Phillip admitted to having a relationship with a much younger man who worked with him on This Morning, and later lying about it.

He described their romance as ‘unwise but not illegal’ and explained it took place during his nearly 30-year marriage.

Phillip resigned from both This Morning and ITV and said that he was ‘so very sorry’ to Steph for being unfaithful.

At the time, it was reported that Steph had been left ‘devastated’ by the revelation and angry that her husband had lied to her.

However, it was later revealed she is choosing not to file for divorce because she does not want him to ‘fall any further’ then he already has, and despite everything, ‘the love is still very much there.’

Phillip’s reported comeback has appeared to be gathering steam, with many stars showing their support for the disgraced presenter through his array of Instagram posts.

ITV was thrown into turmoil earlier this year following Philip’s admission to an ‘unwise but not illegal’ relationship with a much younger colleague, with the host eventually stepping down from ITV altogether.

As well as the breakdown of his career, Phillip’s relationship with co-host Holly Willoughby faltered in the midst of the scandal, with it being heavily reported that the two were at loggerheads.

While Phillip took a significant break from the public eye in the wake of the scandal, in May he made a return to Instagram with posts featuring his dog Alfie.

Stars including Richard E Grant, Rylan Clark and Kate Garraway have shared their support for Phillip through various ‘likes’ and comments underneath his posts.

While comments on his post had been limited, one came from Richard, who posted a row of heart emojis.

Another video, posted on Friday, showed Phillip’s dog messing around under a bed sheet, with This Morning consumer expert Alice Beer commenting: ‘He is such a clown.’

Rylan was also among the thousands to like Phillip’s snap that he shared last week, while Kate Garraway also liked the star’s post on July 14, ahead of England’s Euro 2024 final against Spain.

They continued: ‘Steph is, and always will be, Phillip’s support system. She hasn’t divorced him because she doesn’t want to see him fall any further.

‘Phil has caused his wife a lot of hurt in recent times. But there’s no denying, they still have a great friendship and share a lot of love.’

It comes after it was reported that Phillip was planning to spend Christmas with Steph and their two daughters last year.

The couple were also said to be on ‘better terms’ in December, seven months after Phillip’s bombshell confession, when a source told the Mail: ‘Steph is absolutely devastated, she had no idea of any of this.

‘She is a trusting woman who has supported Phil for many, many years so this has been a real shock to her. Phil always positioned the man as a friend so that has prompted a fair bit of anger, to put it mildly.

‘It is literally the most heartbreaking thing that could have happened to Steph, it isn’t just the relationship but the deceit.’

He also insisted: ‘I had a wonderful marriage, have a wonderful marriage, although it’s not brilliant right now, with an incredibly supportive wife and two wonderful children.’

Phillip also characterised his relationship with his wife at the time as: ‘We are separated but we are very much together.’

‘Let’s just say it was an incredibly difficult conversation. The most difficult conversation I’ve ever had to have with her, and she is extremely disappointed because I lied to her as well. But she wished me well today, and so we’ll see.’

‘With the strength and support of my wife and my daughters, I have been coming to terms with the fact that I am gay.’

In a follow-up post, he spoke about how Stephanie had continued to support him after he came out.

‘Steph has been incredible – I love her so very much. She is the kindest soul I have ever met. My girls have been astonishing in their love, hugs and encouraging words of comfort.

‘Both mine and Steph’s entire families have stunned me with their love, instant acceptance and support. Of course, they are worried about Steph, but I know they will scoop us both up.’

At the time, Steph issued a heartfelt statement in support of her husband and said she would support him in taking the ‘brave step’.

She wrote: ‘We have had to face the most emotionally painful time in our 27 years of marriage. I love Phillip, as much today as I ever have, and always will.’
