Stanley Tucci has revealed how his health has been impacted by a very delayed side-effect from his past cancer treatment.
The 64-year-old actor was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2017 and underwent a high dose of radiation and chemotherapy treatments at the time.
The Devil Wears Prada star explained that he had been left needing a feeding tube for six months in 2018, while recovering from his treatment.
However, the star – who is now in remission – is still dealing with repercussions from his cancer battle seven years after his treatment.
Speaking on a recent episode of David Tennant Does a Podcast With…, the Conclave actor revealed he recently discovered that his ‘thyroid was non-functioning’ due to being ‘burned out’ by the radiation.
Last year, Tucci said he noticed his energy levels were much lower than usual while he was filming in Italy for a TV show.

‘I would be so tired in the afternoon, like completely exhausted by one o’clock and I was like, “Something’s wrong with me,”‘ he recalled.
‘Finally, when it was all over, or just before the last [episode], I had a blood test and I was like, “I know something’s f**king wrong with me.”‘
He then revealed: ‘My thyroid was non-functioning.’
The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland that produces hormones that regulate metabolism, growth, and development.
Tucci first suspected his stress levels were the cause as he continued: ‘I was like, “What is it? Is it stress?” ‘Cause you can [get this] from stress and whatever.
‘They kept saying, “Your cholesterol level’s really high” … what happened was because I had radiation six, seven years ago, it burned out my thyroid.’
The actor revealed he now takes the synthetic thyroid hormone pill Synthroid and will be undergoing further blood tests in order to treat the issue.
He noted: ‘I still get [tired] in the afternoon … literally you can’t think, you can’t move. Once I started taking the pill, it made a huge difference, but I want to get back to where I was.

‘It is normal and especially now I’ve just turned 64. I mean, there are times I don’t want to do f**king anything.’
In 2017, doctors found a tumor at the base of the actor’s tongue, which led to 35 days of treatment.
His treatment included six rounds of chemotherapy for oral cancer and the actor lost 35 pounds because he couldn’t eat, relying on a feeding tube.
It wasn’t until years later, in 2022, that the star openly detailed his challenging recovery process.
The actor recalled the traumatic time in his life and said he considered himself ‘incredibly lucky’ to be alive.
He also revealed that prior to his diagnosis, he dealt with extreme pain in his jaw and couldn’t quite figure out what was going on with his body.
‘I had a scan, but the scan missed it. And of course, when you think that there might be something wrong, you’re also afraid that there is something wrong,’ he told PEOPLE.
After advocating for himself and seeing multiple doctors, he was eventually diagnosed with a three-centimeter tumor on his tongue.
He said: ‘They couldn’t do surgery because the tumor was so big, It’s a miracle that it didn’t metastasize. It had been in me so long.’

A few months after his treatments ended in 2018, he slowly regained his strength to eat, which, at the time was ‘just the most exciting thing in the world’ to him.
Tucci — who shares daughter Emilia, and son Matteo, with his wife Felicity Blunt said: ‘Felicity’s undying attention, affection and encouragement got me through it.’
At the time he noted that some foods tasted ‘weird’ and spicy foods hit his palate the wrong way, but he was happy to be on the mend and was looking forward to sharing his passion for cooking with friends and family.
He said: ‘I couldn’t be with someone who didn’t care about food. I just wouldn’t be attracted to them.’
